The archaeological site of Filippi is located in eastern Macedonia 15 kilometres north of Kavala city. The history of Filippi ( original old name Crenides ) starts in 360 BC when Thacian colonists established the city .When they were threatened by Tracians in 356 BC they asked for Philip's II help, Alexander the Great's father.
Foreseeing the economic and strategic importance of the city, Philip conquered it ,fortified it and renamed it Philippi.In the Roman era Philippi was the most important city in eastern Macedonia, built in a very strategic location and amongst an area rich in goods.
In the year 49 or 50 AC Αpostle Pavlos visited Philippi and founded the first Christian Church of Europe.This fact gave prominence to the city as the metropolis of Christianity.
