Higher education remains rooted in rigid, traditional structures and tracks -- and it's at risk of getting left behind in favor of expanded access, greater flexibility and tailored learning. Educator Tyler DeWitt explains how innovations in digital content and virtual reality are ushering in the future of learning, emphasizing why academia must adapt to this new reality and embrace an approach to education that works with students' needs -- not against them.

My favorite line: "the focus of education should be learning, not teaching"

I'm currently doing a doctorate in physics. The wealth of material on research topics even at such an advanced level available on youtube is amazing.

Teaching is an art of converting knowledge in to understandable language. Which not all teachers possess.

Finally someone who really gets to see that education must be a full mind blowing experience with different modalities that fit in with each person’s learning approaches. Tradition is not going to be eliminated, but actually transformed into its brightest being. We need more people learning. It does not matter how, if efficiency is guaranteed.

This should be seen by the educational institutions all over the world. Education is about learning a skill, and not just about getting a certificate or a tool that can get you a job. When students get into the institutions for the only sake of learning, we would be producing next level professionals!

Traditional universities&colleges over decade have been an outdated system at their current state. They need to vastly transform to be revelant (especially regarding cost).

Love it and make perfect sense! University professors prioritize and incentivized for publishing papers over teaching and giving individual attention to students. So the model hasn’t changed for centuries and screaming for disruption.

It didn’t even occur to me that this was THE Tyler was the one who did those videos! I’m not a Biology major anymore, but his videos helped me the most when I was struggling with Chemistry

Everyone in academia NEEDS to watch this right now. Thank you Tyler for all that you do.

The school system and curriculum is so frustratingly dated. Any and all information is at our finger tips, yet we still expect kids to memorize the most useless definitions/facts and regurgitate everything back on to paper having absorbed nothing of value or substance. Hope the world finally reboots education norms as he says and takes college off the insanely high pedestal that it’s been on for decades.

The irony of watching this while desperately missing going to uni for classes instead of having to take online lectures due to covid. There is a lot more to in person classes that online classes can't provide.

I remember watching Tyler's videos back in high school. He has an incredible capacity for teaching!

Online learning has been the single most detrimental and devastating event to happen through my education. I could not learn online, and I know for a fact that the majority of my colleagues and the students around me did not perform nearly as well as with in person, traditional schooling.

This is all good as long as it is accompanied by universal basic income, because it will make a lot of teachers redundant.

those kitchen tutorial videos were the ones that really made me get hooked on chemistry in my high school years, especially the VSEPR videos, thanks to my teacher who recommended it to my class and used it as her teaching material. Even in this video, you still teach me a lot of things and not limited to chemistry, but life perspective too. Really glad you seem to be doing well today Tyler!
