Hudson Taylor: Missionary to China

In this biography video, we cover the life of Hudson Taylor, the leading British missionary in China throughout the 1800s. Hudson Taylor was born to Methodist parents in England and after rebelling against them, he returned to faith in his teenage years. But after hearing stories from his father James about dynastic China, Taylor became convinced that he was ought to share the gospel of Jesus with the Chinese. In this video, Mr. Mitchell will walk you through what happened to Hudson Taylor when he arrived on the shores of Shanghai in 1854. Having stood in opposition to many of the colonial practices of Britain and after wearing traditional Chinese dress, Taylor became disliked by his own country. For Taylor, the mission of Jesus trumped the colonial mission.

In tis series, Insiders and Exiles Mr. Mitchell will cover some of the most influential voices within Christianity yet unlike names like Martin Luther, cannot be categorised into a particular movement in Church History. The series continues with a biography of Hudson Taylor who boldly proclaimed Jesus to the people of China.

As a Christian who was born in China, I'm very grateful and touched for this coverage of this incredible man who demonstrated to me, and hopefully, to the rest of the world as well, that just as the Word became flesh in Christ Jesus, the Lord of all, this permitted the flesh of men like Hudson Taylor to become the Word of God.

This was a true apostle of our Lord Jesus Christ, who didn't just speak the gospel, but rather, lived it, embodied it, laid his all on the altar for it, his future, his hope, his glory, his comfort, his ease, his luxury, his first wife, his miscarried first child, his first born child, Grace, his second wife, and ultimately, not only his own health, but even also, his own life.

Finally, I'm honoured by the mention of the city where he fought his good fight of the faith and finished his course: Changsha ([the city of the] Long Sand), the provincial capital of Hunan ([Dongting] Lake['s] South), the province of my birth.

We host the largest inland port, being the last place inland accessible by the mighty Yangtze River (in Chinese, "Chang Jiang", literally "[the] Long River", because it is so long that in ancient times, where people didn't communicate easily, each local community had a slightly different name for the River, one of which is actually the Yangtze River, so to collate all the names together to recognise the integrity of the river as a single entity, it began to just be universalised as "Chang Jiang", or "[the] Long River"). And as a result, there is still a bit of trade going through our provincial capital. So it makes sense for the founder of the China Inland Mission to end his journey here.

I think, from the top of my head, there were maybe 5 battles fought over Changsha between Japan and the Nationalists of China during WWII, which was the first place we Chinese seemed to have properly rallied the troops and made a significant effort to turn the tide of war.

Anyway, I'm sure he was one of the inspirations for Watchman Nee, who later returned to China after the Communist takeover and prayed for 20 years in a labour camp for the Christians in China and over sea from 1952–1972 before going to be with our Lord. Amen. What a glorious end!
