Another great teardown! I don't get the obsession with bodges. To me it shows good engineering in that they realized the product could be made a little better and didn't trash thousands of dollars worth of boards every time a minor change was made. Sony's tech bulletin service was excellent and saved me a lot of time when I worked on these machines.

wow those things are just chock full of parts! Never seen so many caps flapping about lol

I never seen a more complex video machine in my life. The people who created this thing should have a medal. People were geniuses back in the day, I suspect that there are not many people capable of making such devices these days. Too bad that this machine is non-functional but hey, It's in the name of science. Thanks for sharing :)

The complexity in that thing is amazing, there sure are some genius's in the electronics, mechanical engineering fields etc to design something that complex for such a precise demanding application. Bodge or mod wires tweaking for perfection forgiven, I suppose nowa days bodges are fixed with a firmware or software update.

Holy Crap, look at all the capacitors that would need to be replaced in time. But last least one could just replace the board instead. I would still state that this unit seems to be built with quality in mind.

You have to bear in mind these were not high volume products and were on the bleeding edge of what was produced at the time - the "bodges" were not untypical for this type of equipment especially when they had to produce multistandard kit eg. ntsc, Pal etc.. The "odd" capacitors or other components that have been "gooped" down may have been because of mechanical vibration in those specific areas following testing. Great video although would prefer you describe the chips rather than me having to google them ;) Thanks

It would have better not to take the machine apart as it could be used with a SONY PCM ADC/DAC unit to enable digital recording and playback of audio.

Not all the "Custom Sony" parts are really custom. The IC's next to the EPROMs for example ending with "CXD..16" are standard 2K static RAM. The TMPZ... IC's from Toshiba are all Z80 CPUs with some extra goodies.

That thing is horrific. How it could be boiled down into a few chips today?

p.s. I want that VFD decibel/vu meter - that is superb.

Did you had a go at the power supply? Maybe i miss it, but that would be interesting to see as well.

The only difference between the Sony pvw-2800p is that this one records four channels of sound, but if the 2800 has a Sony PVW-216FM audio module or even better Michael Sellman LTD, the sound is much better when recording both 2 channels and 4 on the Sony PVW-2800P model than on the Sony BVW-75 model and the stories that 75 writes better a myth that I can dispel by comparing these two models during recording and playback and at a price of 75 it was 3 times cheaper than 2800. how it breaks back is due to a flimsy or unfinished lpm, I am silent for the electronic part.

I'm wondering about all the 90 degree traces. Was this done using some primative auto-router?

Is it just me or does he not understand what single sided and double sided board means? I've always understood those terms to describe whether there are traces on one or both sides, but as far as I can see, he's using those terms to describe whether there are components on both sides or not, calling it single sided when only one side is loaded with components, even though it has traces on both sides.

Big thumbs up! I love this video. All these cards and bodges, wonderful.
I did a teardown of an JVC KM-D600 video effects mixer, and it is the same sort of pro-consumer quality.

Although its a great video presenting all the stuff and some technical details, you shake too much the boards and the camrea when presenting they. That is a pain to watch. Enhance this in your filming, please! :D
