I had the same door and hated it. Clear inserts would have been worse because people would peep in either way. I just treated it like a window and hung curtains to cover it when I was home. It also helped during the winter and snow storms.

Please wear eye protection and gloves.

Coat your broken glass with tape or window tint. The cheapest stuff just to help you throw it away in one piece.
