Navarino Bay Pylos: Peloponnese's Big Blue

In this video we headed to the Bay of Navarino, a small, deep and almost landlocked bay of the Ionian Sea located in Messinia, in the southwestern Peloponnese, Greece. At the vary end of the bay, past Divari beach we stopped for a swim and filmed the gorgeous sea landscape at this remote piece of land. Here, the sand has a golden brown color while the island of Sphacteria is directly in front of us and only a 300 meters away. You can literally swim to the island, Leonardo DiCaprio style (The Beach) but much closer, no sharks.
On top of the beach, there is the old Navarino fortress which we didn't have the time to visit but is worth visiting if you're into hiking. You can also visit Voidokilia beach by foot which we did visit and will be featured on this channel on a later video.
A few historical data about the area:
- Here, took place the famous Battle of Navarino, which was a naval battle fought on 20 October 1827, during the Greek War of Independence (1821–29). Allied forces from Britain, France, and Russia decisively defeated Ottoman and Egyptian forces which were trying to suppress the Greeks, thereby making Greek independence much more likely.
- The Battle of Sphacteria was a land battle of the Peloponnesian War, fought in 425 BC between Athens and Sparta. Following the Battle of Pylos and subsequent peace negotiations, which failed, a number of Spartans were stranded on the island of Sphacteria. An Athenian force under Cleon and Demosthenes attacked and forced them to surrender.
