John of Austria, who lead the holy league at the battle of Lepanto ( and was the natural son of Charles the V) died near the city of Namur, were I study history at the university.

This holy week, I learned that he had taken the citadel of Namur with only 8 men from the protestants and then it was from Namur that the catholics retake the lower Netherlands, now know as Belgium. John was buried in the Cathedral St Aubain, were I had the Christmal mass this week. His heart still remained in the cathedral as his body was transfered to Spain as he was the brother of Philipp the Second.

Plus, near my house, I go to the mass of the little town of Philippeville (Philipp's Town). In the Church, there is graves of military marine officers from the same era of John (plus some of the 17th and 18th century). I wonder if they were at the battle of Lepanto too (plus my local Church is far from the coast... a bit strange to have marine officers buried there 😂).
