1917 is a 2019 war film directed and produced by Sam Mendes, who co-wrote it with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Partially inspired by stories told to Mendes by his paternal grandfather Alfred about his service during World War I, the film takes place after the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line during Operation Alberich, and follows two British soldiers, Will Schofield (George MacKay) and Tom Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman), in their mission to deliver an important message to call off a doomed offensive attack. Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Claire Duburcq, Colin Firth, and Benedict Cumberbatch also star in supporting roles.

He saved all those lives by delivering that message and his reward was "piss off".

This entire movie was filmed in a way so that it looks like a single unbroken scene. It was such a good movie.

The actor who portrayed the messenger did an INCREDIBLE job. His voice, when he begs for the letter to be read... Chills!

I remember skipping high school class just to go watch this movie on my own. I was alone in the big movie theater aswell. I’ll never forget that experience

Loved this scene it showed so much of the futility so much that the officer in charge, who had been portrayed as the villan essentially in the film throughout was trying to do the right thing.

My maternal grandfather served in France during WWI. He was wounded in action. Like many other Black American wounded soldiers, he was not awarded the Bronze Star medal. He never talked about his experiences in the war at all. He died in 1973. I never understood his silence until I watched the movie 1917. That movie gave me the reasons for his silence.

The fact the letter survived and was still legible after the water scene is lucky as fuck

I always thought the ending of this movie was bittersweet. Schofield wasn't a hero who saved the lives of thousands of men in one fell swoop. He only spared their lives for a few scant weeks before the next futile attempt to charge.

I commented somewhere here already about this but worth noting that Cumberbatch is completely correct in his assessment of the orders. The movie takes place on the 6th of April. Just 3 days later on the 9th the Battle of Arras starts where the movie happens. If the movie was real life hed have been ordered to go ahead with his assault just a few days later

Why I love Benedict Cumberbatch: He becomes his characters. No matter the writing or the directing.

The best part about this film is that the first hour or is without any cuts. Incredible acting and a gripping story.

If you're going to talk back to a superior you had better have a damn good reason. And I can't think of a better one.

imagine if your officers were competent, imagine if your command was competent. now imagine both trusted eachother to know what the hell they were doing. good now forget it because that's not reality
