The last execution in France outside of a prison was in 1939. After this year all executions in France were inside the prison without spectators. The very last execution with a guillotine in France was in 1977. I think it was in Marseille.

France held onto the practice as long as they could. Probably the disgust of the rest of the world looking down on this practice was part of why they ceased to use it.

I SO empathize with the collapsed soldier at the Queen's parade ! I came close twice in my time in service, using every trick I knew to fight it off. Being on the edge of collapse, not enough oxygen, sweating, weakness, legs turned to rubber and feeling like a tree swaying in the wind. Of course, I was as still as the man next to me but it didn't seem that way ! The little tricks helped to keep enough blood and oxygen flowing until we started actually moving again, and that saved me both times. I was lucky, as my unit had a deeply heartfelt sentiment of "This Company DOESN'T pass out ! Go to another company if you're going to do that."

IF, the late princess Diana was riding that horse and saw that soldier collapse in front of her; because of her sensitivity towards people, I truly believe she would get off her horse to help with assistance attend to the soldier. 😳
