I’ve got this lens! I got it just last year when I started out in photography and for a beginner who isn’t too sure about getting into this field, I’d say it’s a great starter lens. I’ve gotten some pretty amazing shots of the moon and a couple birds with this lens and it’s true that there’s some fringing to it but as you explained it can be fixed easily. Since I’ve had it for a little over half a year now, I’ve realized the build quality is deteriorating quicker than I would have expected. The locking ring doesn’t work too well but it’s something that is easy to get used to. As for the manual focusing, that’s not too difficult to work with and I personally think it’s only making me more skilled at my hobby. Overall, I’d say this is an incredible deal for a starter and for someone who’s wanting to get some great longer-distance pictures at a smaller budget.

that model of 420-800mm lens @ f/8.3-f/16 is sold everywhere on amazon. There is like 20 companies that sell the exact same lens with their respective branding on it. I bought it for astrophotography for like 90$ (terrible deal). It's actually pretty decent even for a demanding type of photography like astrophotography. Even with the compatible 2x convertor, shooting at f/32 it's still better than you would think

The main issue is the tripod foot ring breaks after like 2 months. You can probably DIY a sort of dovetail ring holder for it but still.

I had one of these when I first started photography. Honestly if you just want to take photos of the moon, it's plenty sharp. You're already stopping down the aperture for photos like that

I like playing with cheap lenses and seeing what kind of fun artsy shots I can get.

I would buy this for astrophotography on a star tracker mount the focal length is really good

Depends on the camera and intent. If you're shooting for fun, it's cheap enough for a goof around.

I have this lens and I love it. It is a good macro lens too.

please do a full video of this lens comparing with proper zoom lens or digitally zoomed prime lens

I got one of these and it's plenty decent for astrophotography or photographing subjects from afar. If you use a 67mm UV filter, the CA isn't as bad as shown

Tom, perhaps do a comparison with this and another decent lens at say 500mm, apply sharpening and such and see which looks better…?

I will definitely buy it for its price it's so good I think
But first I should get a camera 😂

Good quip about the sun, but a little pushback. Sunny 16 says that on a sunny day, you should be fine at f/16 if you set your shutter speed to the inverse of your ISO. Given how sensitive digital sensors are, you could easily get away with 1/1000 or faster, even on a bit of a cloudy day. Granted, not gonna be doing any nighttime stuff with it, but I hope no expeditions to the sun are planned 😎 lol

The only thing that's been shown that I can afford 🤣

could get a great old film lens and mount adapter for that price, maybe not at that focal length tho

I would definitely not like to shoot from the surface of the Sun but catadioptric lenses are fun to shoot with but whatever it is the lens should be a lens and it should bring some pictures of quality of definite category! But the matter, aberrations of the pictures out of this lens could be fixed it could be given a try with almost no price paid for such a zoom lens!

It looks comparable in quality to those attachments you fit on a phone for more telephoto shots. I’d just get something reputable but still cheap like sigma or tamron second hand.

Saw this wacky thing, and I was surprised to see this short. It is very cheap, and intriguing. I think I might try it, or even save up for the TTartisan 500mm, but honestly I'm still not sure if it's worth it to get that for moon shots.

Considering composition is the most important thing in photography - id say its worth it

On a M43 it is going to give you 1600mm. This might work well in astro photography where AF and OIS are not needed
