Learning How to Wire a Double Plug Socket | The Carpenter's Daughter

Last Saturday, our family electrician offered to teach me how to wire a UK double plug socket and couldn't resist filming my lesson for my own future use. The entire two sockets I did were under strict supervision, which I share my first-hand experience and tips given to me.

Please note, this is NOT a tutorial and I am NOT A PROFESSIONAL. Electrics should only be carried out by competent people or qualified electricians, so if in doubt, DON'T or consult an electrician. If you copy any of the work in this video, you are doing so at your own risk.

Also, it depends from council to council regarding what home electrics homeowners can do themselves, so ALWAYS check.

I do all my own DIY too and once you have done it you realise most things are actually quite easy, I find electrics easier than plumbing. Glad to see you are trying out other DIY jobs like this video. It really adds to the channel and makes it even more interesting. Stay Safe

Good going - I’ve done a few sockets while on the phone to my Dad - under supervision - and I’m still alive! 😀 well done 👍

I have wondered for years what the plugs and wiring were like there. Now I know. Thank you!

Fair play to you having a go at electrics, not everyone has the skills to do it, got to admire your confidence, well done.

When cutting the cables to length tuck them into the box and run them straight up then fully left/right and about 40mm or 1.5 inch outside of the box, those cables looked a bit short, some sockets have live neutral terminations on the far corners so someone may struggle to change the socket plus if a socket goes faulty and wiring the ends of the wires burn/melt away due to a faulty plug there is a bit more to cut away to reterminate.
Usb sockets, I haven't fitted any but I have heard they are deeper and may require 35mm boxes instead of the 25mm

Quick recommendation as an electrician myself, pick up a socket tester that way when you change a socket you can plug the tester in after the power goes on and it will tell you if it is wired ok. Just another way of making sure that it's safe.
They are inexpensive but handy.

Shocking entertainment that. I'd call that spot on. Seems like you were in good and patient hands while having a go.

Nice video! I've always done my own electrical. I've learned not to trust how the electrical panel is labeled. Thankfully the voltage is lower here in the states. Now I carry one of those non-contact testers and use it whenever I'm doing this work. Thanks for sharing.

One thing you forgot to mention . One is the mains feed in and the other is the loop to the other socket . Just in case people are wondering why two sets of cables . Other than that neat job Vicky . Now try it with u.s.b sockets pain in the backside as the back is thicker making your wire bend slightly different.

You made a good point that live and neutral are brown and blue respectively in older wiring its red and black. If adding new cable to existing wiring connect red to brown and black to blue
