Honestly I feel like art that people find enjoyable to see or have had effort put in is worth more than art that doesn’t have these qualities, but sometimes the art that has the most effort isn’t as recognized compared to simpler art with less effort

Im a firm believer that all art is... well art. Even "bad" art. Art can be anything, at any level of skill and any style, and beyond that can come in any form (painting, sculpting, drawing, books, movies, games, etc.) My understanding of what puts someone off about art that seems too simple or nonsensical to a first glance is how art in our world is tied or divorced from money. People can work very very hard on a piece and on their craft and barely make enough to get by, making the piece in some regards lesser in value. On the other side is what people outside of art circles seeing what appears to be a childs understanding of colours and shapes (huge oversimplification i know) be sold at auction for more than that person or others could make in a few years of effort. That is extremely frustrating and seeing the gap can make people disillusioned when people talk about the value or importance of art, especially contemporary art. Im like that too admittedly, I've seen art that I don't personally like and it gives me that feeling that you need to push back on and remind yourself that its still art even if its not for you.

Theres also the people who will refuse to budge and proclaim contemporary art as a whole as bad, but thats a whole other barrier in the conversation.

This is the same argument as rap/classical music. Classical music needs more skill to make, and therefore is considered more complicated. You don’t need years of music theory to make rap, but nonetheless it’s still a form of art.

Don't get mad at the people who don't want to go through 4 years of shitty university just to understand the importance of shapes on a page. We will still call it shitty art because other forms of art more appealing to normal people exist.
Go off into your modern art rabbit hole. Fine. But do not get offended when average every day people think this was made by a toddler because of how seemingly basic the work is.

I still disagree with you. Art should require skill. Realism takes way more skill and training. We can just agree to disagree on this subject.
