Film Room: Why Justin Herbert Should Win Offensive Rookie of the Year

Possibly the most controversial prospect from the 2020 NFL Draft was Justin Herbert out of Oregon. He was a player with a big arm, he had great size standing at 6-foot-6, but many questioned his decision making back in college. They worried that his hit-or-miss play style would lead to very inconsistent results in the NFL. Well despite these concerns, Herbert is already proving his doubters wrong. He’s been playing incredibly well even though his team has failed on a number of occasions to pull off the win.

Now that we’re a little over a halfway through the season, I think it’s time to breakdown his play in detail. I want to look at what he does well. I want to look at where he can improve and I want to discuss some of the things that scouts said about him while he was in college. In this video, I discussed my case for what Justin Herbert should win Offensive Rookie of the Year.

This video is roughly 11 minutes long. Sit back, relax, and enjoy!

One thing to note: This video/script was finished on Sunday morning BEFORE Joe Burrow suffered that gruesome injury; however, I still think the comparison is valid at the end. Herbert was in the lead for OROY at that point in time even though Burrow did make it extremely competitive. I REALLY hope Burrow comes back from that injury because he's a very good quarterback.

As a die hard duck fan, I've watched his entire college career. During that time he had three head coaches and numerous quarterback coaches. The sky is the limit for Herbert. Once he gets his sea legs, look out! The five teams that passed him up are going to regret it. He only had one standout receiver at Oregon which really held him back. The chemistry forming between him and Keenan Allen is going to be an incredible thing to watch.

At this point it Justin Herbert, and then everybody else. Justin Jefferson and Chase Claypool would be the next closest candidates.

chargers offense is basically must see football this year, and thats only because of herbert. ive been extremely impressed by him. hopefully the chargers can pull their shit together and get a proper oline and d assembled. they wont be winning their division with the chiefs in there, but they can surely contest for a wildcard spot with herbert at some point

Offensive Rookie of Year is a lock for Herbert.
His lazer to Allen against the Jets was off the charts.

No wr will win ROY over a qb that might throw 35 tds. Get real.

Tired all of the bums commenting on this video that don’t know what they’re talking about. Herbert has 22 tds, 2700 yards, and a 71.8 qbr through nine games. Burrow is a very talented qb but this kid has better stats and is playing better period. And Jefferson, claypool, and Robinson are very good as well but Herbert plays the hardest position in football and he is flourishing while doing so. Could easily be 7-3 instead of 3-7 with better defense and coaching. And the chargers are averaging almost 30 ppg since he took over. He gonna be a future mvp and hall of fame quarterback. Sit back and enjoy the show 😎

That first pass you're analyzing vs the Chiefs is still my favorite Herbert pass and the one that proved to me that he was absolutely a possible superstar. Manningesque throw!

So as a Duck fan I'm always surprised how surprised people in the NFL are about Herbie. He's doing the same thing in the NFL he did at Oregon. The primary difference is that the OC at Oregon when Herbert was here sucked. The only thing that prevented Herbert from being one of the best players in college football was his OC. He's on pace if he continues to shatter several rookie QB stats in NFL history. Yup that's right in the history of the NFL. Go Herbie, go Bolts! ROY? Who cares I am guessing honestly he doesn't... He wants to win overall vs personal accolade.

I love how although u talked about the thing she needed to work on you still make it known that other qbs still struggle to it’s going to happen where as others immediately say that he will never get better at what he struggles at👌. You’re spitting straight facts my dude

As a Chargers fan, I am disappointed about our record and feel we should have won more than 3 games. But having Justin Herbert makes me super excited for the future. It makes me proud that we took him and how he proved all the haters wrong

Oregon needs to be fined for keeping all this talent under wraps

Burrow also had the most attempts across the entire league so I feel like he should have more yards, TDs, and completions by far yet Herbert is ahead of him in all most all stats. Herbert is just a beast
