Back in the 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s people were still trying to recover from the depression and WW2. The major winter crops they would plant around here in about mid July was turnips, rutabagas, salsify, radishes, and other root chops. The best quality was used for humans and the lesser quality was feed to farm animals. Even the tops were used mostly as animal feed. In the UP of Michigan, pasties were made with the chopped root crops. Salsify could be used to make mock oyster stew. Except for the radishes, these root crops could be prepared and stored all winter and they did not require ration coupons. This added to the diet and health when there was so many shortages. Dad loved the way Mother made the rutabagas.

My fall and winter garden has become my favorite because of big pressure and of course not having to be in the heat outside with mosquitos!

Shabbat Shalom from Tennessee! We follow the Bible in all gardening and discovered you actually do a lot of the practices. Was surprised when you said Shabbat Shalom. Made my heart jump a backflip, standup and smile.... ear to ear. :)

You need to add an automatic closer on the basement doors.

I live in the Australian tropics, and winter is the *only* time I can grow lettuce, tomatoes, beans, snow peas, etc. The rest of the year, it's too hot, too many bugs, too much humidity, etc, as you said. So it's currently our southern hemisphere equivalent of January, and I'm eating freshly picked lettuce, beans and snow peas, and watching my tomatoes, baby beets and baby spinach maturing. In a couple of months, I'll be planting for the Wet (summer) season.

We have two large boxes next to our back door I've been wanting to make into kitchen garden beds. This inspired me to get it going tomorrow!

Hey Justin, you should think about installing automatic door closures on those doors from the outside to your basement
