In his school and student years Jung developed profound interest in philosophy and the humanities, this was especially the case for Nietzsche but also Kant and Schopenhauer, in this video I quote from his book: memories, dreams, reflections when he talks about the influence Schopenhauer and Kant had on his thinking but also how he disagreed with schopenhauer's answer to the will to life using Kant's theory of knowledge

The more I learn about Jung the more I love the man. He had such a spirit and desire to live in him and always sought to learn.

Thank you for these short clips, I quite enjoy them. Schopenhauer's essays are very cathartic to read when life puts a ski boot on & kicks you squarely in the family jewels.

If Jung has read more of Schopenhauer’s writing he would have understood Schopenhauer did not think the intellect can necessarily surpass the will, but rather that an individual’s character pre-determines their interactions with the world as it appears to them. thus it is not intellect that releases from the will to life but a different will, an ethical will. Which just like the will for life, is forcing the individual to act upon it, without any free choice. Schopenhauer’s pessimism is because he views any will, malevolent as most wills are or benevolent as few are pre-determined to have, is beyond the individual’s ability to shape. He had no delusions of intellect overcoming the will since, as Hume already established, reason is the slave of the passions. By his own account he did not stand up to his ethical standards, regardless of the intellect he took pride in having. Schopenhauer considered intellect as able to understand all that comes from the will, but not able to shape the will itself.

I like the will and representation theme by Schopenhauer, it feels fundamental like the wave and particle in Quantum Mechanics. I also find Carl Jung’s insights honest and helpful.

The irony of Jung criticizing Schopenhauer for the sin of hypostatizing the Will is incredible; considering his role in the complete reification of "The Unconscious".

How could Jung equate Schopenhauer's 'Wille' with 'god' ? It is said again and again the Wille is a blind force, while any
concept of a personal god has intent and character [ meaning 'good' ]
Maybe Jung needed spectacles on his third eye.

I applaud these efforts to clarify the opaque world of philosophy.

Such videos' production for global services in the field of dissemination of knowledge so widely, on different disciplines and, allowing the producers and contributors, leaving the watchers sans receiving their applauding is beyond imagination. The videos your Channel produces are best, always. The excellent service beggars description. Comments added from Pakistan's capital Islamabad.

When I read "the world as will and as representation" (still a little bit left) I was surprised to see so many early "prototypes" of Jung's ideas if that makes sense. Schopy gives a very satisfying definition of what Jung would later call archetypes, though he does not develop the idea or give precise examples (like talking about animals without ever giving them names), and he considers things from a cosmic perspective rather than from the human mind.
You can see that Schopenhauer had a tremendous influence over those who came after him, and even though some of his ideas are downright laughable, he had many impressive intuitions.
He is also one of the few philosophers that are actually funny sometimes, which helps with the long read.

"He had committed the deadly sin of hypostatizing a metaphysical assertion and of endowing a mere noumena with special qualities." Jung is one of the most attentive sensitive readers I've ever encountered. (This is how he manages to sort through the alchemists, whether we can follow him or not.) The only person who consistently amazes me more is Raymond Williams.

What do you think about Jung's criticism of Schopenhauer?

A while ago I started listening to Schopenhauer audio book, got side tracked on to Kant, and then I just kind of dropped it. Time to to try again, maybe I'll actually buy a book this time.

Really necessary to have a long ad before this under 5 minute video? You get to skip after 5 seconds but it's still vexing.

Love these videos. I’m working on my own series on Jung and masculine archetypes. I would love to find people to discuss this philosophy with.

Well blind will becomes not blind wenn its creates consciousness as eyes of itself, and in a mirror, that is in art and philosophy(maybe), can see itself.
But yes, i see your point i always thought that the will is blind but not exactly stupid.

What we have here is a 5-minute video about Carl Jung's realization that you can't buy happiness.

I don't see how this had anything to do with Kant or Schopenhower.

I have a question: Should you read Kant before reading Schopenhauer?
