That weird circular motion he was doing with his thumb gave me some insight on the actual angle I need to get my thumb under the string for the up stroke. Now I just gotta stop getting caught under the string.

Not efficient enough that thumb... for me personally it's better to leave the thumb aligned to the string, and move the wrist accordingly
