Frozen Saber-Toothed Cat Mummy Found In Siberia!

For hundreds of years, ice mummies have been pulled from or fallen out of permafrost deposits across the arctic and subarctic. You may be familiar with the impressive mammoth mummies of Siberia, but several decades have revealed a distressingly growing list of ice-age animals which have helped to flesh out the world of Pleistocene Eurasia more than any bone could ever do. We’ve seen bears, wolf heads, cave lion cubs, and woolly rhino and elephant calves, but a holy grail has finally been found – an animal from the Pleistocene for which there are no known modern analogues – a saber-toothed cat, of sorts. Let’s take a gander at the frozen mummy of a Homotherium cub, quite possibly one of the most important ice age paleontological discoveries ever made.

The discovery of a century really because let's just be honest nobody has ever seen a saber-toothed cat mummy before and let's just be honest we always went on conjecture and theory on what the animals actually look like and now it's just so awesome to finally see what these animals look like in the flesh instead of just using Modern Cats of what these animals actually look like in real life.

This may not be the same species as Smilodon but it definitely gives us Insight on what the most famous of all the saber-toothed cats might have looked like and what features homotherium can tell us what Smilodon Fatalis looked like, and since homotherium is a distant relative of Smilodon it's a possibility of knowing what the cat might have looked like.

A muscle covering the saber teeth in saber toothed cats is like the debate about lips in tyrannosaurs.

No one depicts a picture of a saber cat with long hair.... but if a 3 week kitten has a coat of hair that thick, I would bet that an adult had long hair that was short on the legs but may have been long enough to hang close to the ground. They may have even had a coat with thickness resembling a modern day domestic cat with long hair.

I must also comment on Scientists going beyond the empirecal knowledge gained here and trying to suggest that the adults were colored like rainbows because the kitten was a solid color. That would be like trying to say that tiger cubs are not born with stripes, or leopard cubs born without spots. In nature I cant think of any big cat off the top of my head whose kittens were born with a solid color that later as adulthood was reached turneed into striped or spots. So I think they blew that hypothesis.

Another comment on male displays seems pretty illogical when considering that both in Homotherium and Smilodon the fangs were long in both male and female. If a beard was a sign of male display than one could ask what sex the cub is however the back half is gone. Maybe there is another way to tell?

Just my take. But I digress because of lack of detailed knowledge.

If I wasnt so afraid of being conscripted and sent to Ukraine i would mind taking a trip and visiting that storage facility if they allow tours. There are probably a lot of mummies there no one has ever seen.

I got to see the baby elephant exhibit a few years ago. Mammoths, mastodons and other early elephants, and the short faced cave bear were at a museum. Amazing stuff.

Amazing, I personally think that this Homotherium latidens frozen mummy specimen will provide substantial information about Prehistoric felines. The anatomy is quite unusual and interesting. Something that I feel like should be studied more is the metabolism of Homotherium latidens since metabolism correlates with diet, ecosystem, ecology, anatomy, etc. This is an amazing specimen and study. Paleontology is growing substantially. Good job, keep up the good work.

Would be amazing if a well preserved mummified Neanderthal will be discovered. It is not that impossible and may well be a matter of time as more ice melts.

This is a truly important specimen in the evolutionary history of our feline friends.

The paleo art is so cool, they all seem realistic on how the adult would've looked like 🐱

Thanks for this amazing update! I wonder if the beard patch in adults would serve to conceal the cat's large teeth in profile if they protruded from the mouth

I can definitely say that "bearded cat" is my headcanon name for homotherium latidens now, i don't know about you guys, but the idea of this cat having a beard is so awesome🧔‍♂️

Utterly cool! Even that much idea of the fur is marvelous. Oh, to see an adult!
