Tilta Mini Matte Box - Worth It?

Hello everyone! How are you all?

In this video I discuss what I like and a small concern I have about the Tilta Mini Clamp-on Matte Box. My concern isn't a huge one but it is something to be aware may happen.

This review is not sponsored or affiliated with Tilta. I purchased this with my own money to use on shoots coming up.

I would also like to say a massive thank you to everyone for giving me the time and space to process and take care of the issues happening with my dog. She is my child and I love her so much. She is ok for the moment but the future is not looking so good for her. Without going into too much detail she has an aggressive cancer and doesn't have too long left with us. We have done eveything we can to make her comfortable and now it's a matter of making her limited time with us even more special. So thank you xx

Hope you got something from this video and if you have any ideas of things that you want to see in a video, leave a comment below and let me know!

I'm based around photo lenses and screw on filters. Someday I'd love to be using cinema lenses and 4x5.6 filters. In the mean time though, the Crimson Engine guy had a great observation - when using a matte box that rail mounts, and has adapters, you can screw your screw-on filters to the adapter, and just slide the matte box back to butt up against the lens. You might need to use a nicker to get a good light block, but doing this uses less expensive filters and you can swap lenses and leave the filters in place. If you know you're not going to swap lenses often (or at all) for a shoot, then this looks like a great option, particularly if you can use one or more screw-on filters.

I'm very sorry to hear about your dog's illness. It's great when you come out with videos regularly, but no one should expect you to do so or complain, particularly if you have more important things to do like this.

Essentially a expensive sun shade.
I love that you said it! I am thinking to get it and get nisi (4x5.65)polarizer. Is it going to introduce some weird colors or something when combined with VND screw on under the polarizer? I am filming a lot of water so polarizer would be good think to have, but big bulky mattebox is not something I want to deal with.

Thanks for this review! Most helpful I've seen as we were considering this solution for single filters on some of our DSLR lenses. Def not a pro solution, but hopefully something to work in a pinch or for travel shoots.

thanks for sharing.
if you already have an nd filter on your lens you wond be able to mount the adaper ring on the lens anymore?
the 4x5.65 filters are really expensive and tbh i am purchasing the matte box just to make my camera look more professional to make the clients feel better.

Great review Felicity...as always. Not sure how a lens with a clamp on Matte Box would would handle windy conditions, think that's where rails would work better.

Nice video! How can I use my 4x4 filters on this matt box ? how can I close the sides ?

Love it, I got an email about the mini matte box and was very interested in it but I already have all my circular filters and really it would just be a lens hood... I feel like if I'm going to get 4x5.65 filters I would get something with drop ins anyway but it does look like a great option if your just starting out

Hello Felicia! Great video thank you so much. Did I hear you correctly? - aside from the slide in 4x5 filter holder, you can screw in a filter - Can you screw the filter into the front of the adapter? Thing is, I already have a 4x5 ND, Pro Mist, plus other 82mm filters and would like to use both - SO, for instance, an 82mm Pro Mist into the 82mm adapter, plus a 4x5 ND. Then in theory, I could get step up rings for my smaller lenses to go onto the Tilta adapter. I have reached out to Tilta but their answers are a little cryptic :) Does that make sense? Anyways - thank you - love your work. Best regards, Jason

I like my wooden camera zip box pro as you can use two filters + a 138mm round filter in the back - it is more expensive but i’m using two filters all the time.

what “pro” matte box would you recommend? might get the new bright tangerine misfit kick in the future

Excellent video! Very well informed and straight to the point. Question about the round filter that would go on the inside of the matte box, is it big enough to fit a filter that threads 77mm but increases to 86mm?

What size circular filter does the Matte box take on the inside? I can't seem to find that anywhere.

thx for sharing your experience but there are more downside when it comes to the position of the filter. filters should be mounted as close as possible to the lense for reducing flares, reflections and dust. and the adapters won't match on 114mm cine lenses

Do you use step up or step down rings?

Matte Boxes were invented to keep the front element of the lens in shade... Did you find any flaring or reflection issues with having the filter out front rather then shaded as it would be in a traditional design?
That potential for scratching would certainly make most 1AC's hesitate, but when you need a Matte Box for a crash cam or where space is limited, or for light weight, such as filming sports, this would be a good choice.

Can I use this on 35 and 50mm lenses and on 35 and 50mm cine lenses and 18-55mm lenses ?

Thanks for answering my last question. I have another one. How can I make this work with my professional camcorder? I have a Sony HXR-NX100.
