Act I, Prelude: As the instrumental overture plays, we watch Beowulf ready himself for bed. He brushes his teeth, combs his hair, buttons his pajamas. He looks at himself for a few minutes in the mirror. "Beowulf" is a world premiere opera with music and libretto by Hannah Lash and stage direction by Andrew Eggert. This world premiere opera is a modern-day adaptation of the well know epic poem, in which Beowulf is a doctor caring for his elderly mother and suffering from Post-Traumatic Stresses upon his return from a recent war. "Beowulf" investigates what it means to be a hero. This opera is scored for soprano, tenor, baritone, violin, clarinet, sax, and percussion. It is 80 minutes in duration and sung in English.
