Japan launches first whaling ship in 70 years

A new Japanese whaling ship has set sail on its first trip, fuelling the controversy over Tokyo’s continued support for the consumption of whale meat.
Japan is one of only three countries that allow commercial whaling, and the new ocean-going mothership is the first of its kind built in 70 years.

All these internet experts none of which live in Japan none of which grew up in Japan none of which have probably been to Japan.

Japan is a sovereign nation and can do as it pleases/needs to ensure its population has sufficient resources and food security.

India hates that 90% of the world eats cows and while cows may be dummer than whales all animals (that includes humans) are intelligent just depending on the method of test used to determine the lvl which are all over the place intelligence. One test can say a squirrel is intelligent and a cat is dumb while another will say a cat is intelligent and a person is dump. It’s all about how it’s tested & there’s no unified testing method

People need to stop criticizing a country /culture /situation they have no knowledge about just because they see its popular on social media.

We don’t eat whale meat anymore in the USA sure but we also have 10x the arable land of Japan for farming don’t have nearly as many other nations surrounding us depleting our fisheries, & until less than 100 years ago we did hunt & eat whale meat too.

Japan is thinking of its citizens. If its citizens vote to ban whale meat they should but guess what they haven’t because they don’t have the same option/access to resources as all these people complaining about whaling

As a Japanese, I'm ashamed. I wish they would stop this non-sense. Food? No, there are plenty. We overfish bluefin tuna also that's going to be extinct in the near future. Japan, as polite as they are seen, there are many controversies like this that younger generation needs to change and save both the ecosystem and valuable resources that are meant to be part of nature. Not for profit.

They are disgusting! I saw documentary about their whaling season. They kill dolphins and sell the beautiful ones for aquarium. They kill those they eat even by drown them. It’s extremely disgusting. 200 whales of their first hunt? Like wtf

Why people always criticize eating dog meat, while keep closed eyes to eating whales? Because Japan is so "civilized"?
