FLCL embraces it's weirdness and is abstract. It feels like it has all sorts of inside jokes that are therapy for the animators. I feel like this formula is really the niche that anime fills for me. Two other anime's that have totally different vibes but fit the same formula are Dandadan and Dorohedoro. Awesome intro songs and plots that sound pretty ridiculous if you spoke them out loud. I'd recommend Scissor Seven, too, I'm thinking about it. All of these I enjoy the songs so much I end up watching the credits and the even the credits have little side jokes in them. My favorite all time anime is probably Samurai Champloo. Killer intro song but a more serious tone...still pretty funny, though. Watch 'em

Flcl (the first one) is the only good one, sucks that it's only 6 episodes and the best by a long shot out of the other 5 that I personally think are awful compared to this one

I probably watched this the same year it came out in Japan in 2000. Did I like it? Yes. Super fan? Meh... Then years later I began noticing an abundance of cult followers of this anime in the US as if this was the best thing to ever happen in their lives and frankly, It became super annoying like a lot of stuff in "otaku culture" and then it made me sort of dislike this anime all together...
