I'm a 67 year old musician (never on a pro level) who has always held the POV that the Beatles were the best but even before the Thriller LP, I remember telling my musician friends and acquaintances that M Jackson was sending the music world in an entirely new direction. I even predicted that if anyone was going to break the Beatles record setting numbers, it would be him.

It wasn't long after that MJ's Thriller shot holes in every record ever set by the Beatles. I think if "Beat it" (a song written by MJ), was ever released as a single 45 RPM record, (as opposed to digital downloads), it would've even broke the 50 million single-recording sales record of Bing Crosby's "White Christmas"! However, the many variables that could affect those numbers make it almost impossible to be certain.

Everything from the year of the release to the overall mitigating circumstances affected by historic activity surrounding the year of release, would play a significant part in the prediction. Economic and political events just before and after each song's release date would certainly have an effect.

At the end of the day, what the sales records were is unimportant. It's really about the music when you come right down to it.

I know many who would agree that MJ was a rare phenomenon but I'm sure there are many who would disagree. But then, not everyone was born with a good taste in music. There are far too many who thought "Bird's the Word" was a great song... 😞What can I say... They really are out there and many are of voting age!😧

I was hit hard emotionally when I heard that J Lennon had been shot dead. In fact, I was the night manager of a 60-man machine shop when the news blared out on the radio that night. I called in my 2 lead-men and told them to take over because I was leaving for the night. (I think I just told them that I didn't feel well).

I think I was almost equally stunned when I heard the news that MJ had been found dead... In my opinion, the death of MJ was a huge, unrecoverable loss, for the entire art encompassing all music genres.
