Adana, she may not be a household name just yet, but 27-year-old Tobago-born singer, Adana Roberts, is getting there. Adana is not exactly new to the stage. At the age of 15, she was already a solo act performing at national events and even winning the National Joint Action Committee (NJAC) Junior Calypso competition. At 16, she was crowned the first ever Tobago Soca Monarch champion which was hosted by Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (Tuco). Knowing that she desires being a formidable force in the music industry, Adana Roberts, who tip-toed into the limelight as “Princess Adana”, has begun to evolve. She has rebranded and will now be simply known as “Adana” as she searches for her niche. “I began performing professionally at 16 years old. I am now a mother and a woman, so my management and I felt that we should drop the ‘Princess’. I had gotten known for a certain style, so I have also changed my sound and will showcase my vocals a little more.” Also known for her reggae flavour, the 26-year-old Tobago native shared how she began her journey in music. “My teacher heard me singing in the hallway and suggested that I enter NJAC’s calypso competition. He wrote a song, “Too Much Crime” and I won. Being the winner, I was allowed to take part in N.J.A.C’s calypso competition in Trinidad.” Since then, she has not looked back.
