As a Senator, Joe Biden was one of the main sponsors of the 1994 crime bill, which included provisions that established harsher penalties for drug offenses and mandatory minimum sentences for certain crimes involving firearms.

Regarding the penalties for having crack and a firearm, the 1994 crime bill established a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison for a first-time offense of possessing five grams of crack cocaine, and a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in prison for a first-time offense of possessing ten grams of crack cocaine. Additionally, the bill imposed a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison for anyone who used or carried a firearm during a drug trafficking offense or a crime of violence.

Critics of the bill argue that these provisions unfairly targeted communities of color, as crack cocaine use was more prevalent in these communities and the harsher penalties disproportionately impacted them.

Imagine being so dumb you think espionage and paying your taxes late are the same thing... Yes, McCarthy, we have a two-tiered justice system. Those suspected of misdemeanors get treated very differently than those suspected of 71 (and counting) felonies.
I for one am glad that misdemeanor offenses are treated differently than felonies - it's kind of the point.
