Learning at public universities countrywide has ground to a halt as lecturers begin strike to demand better pay.
The university academic staff union went ahead with the industrial action ignoring a court order that declared the strike illegal. The lecturers are demanding a 50 per cent salary increase that they insist was agreed on in a 2013 collective bargain agreement. The dons are joined in the strike by their support staff under the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU). On Tuesday, the inter-public universities council consultative forum had received an extension of the orders barring the strike until 1st February when a case challenging the action is to be heard and determined.
