Title: Transforming Education: Nurturing Character and Competence

Introduction

In our society, education has lost its true purpose. Many schools focus solely on solving mathematical problems and memorizing scientific facts without fostering a deep understanding of concepts. Similarly, language learning often revolves around rote memorization rather than meaningful comprehension. In some schools, Quran Tajweed is taught without students understanding the profound meaning of the Quranic verses. This aimless approach to education has led to a decline in knowledge-based individuals and a deterioration in various aspects of our nation's progress. To remedy this situation, we must reevaluate and redefine the concept of education.

The Purpose of Education

Education should not merely be about acquiring information; it should be a holistic process that shapes individuals' characters and develops their competence. When we speak of character, we refer to qualities such as integrity, courage, and patience. These attributes can only be nurtured when individuals possess a deep understanding and competence in their chosen fields. A good education system, therefore, aims to cultivate both character and competence in students.

Developing Schools for Character and Competence

To foster individuals of character and competence, our schools must prioritize certain aspects of education. Firstly, language skills should be given due importance. Proficiency in languages such as English, Urdu, and others enables effective communication and enhances overall learning. However, language learning should go beyond surface-level memorization and instead focus on understanding and critical thinking.

Secondly, subject knowledge should be built upon a solid foundation of concepts. Students should be encouraged to delve deep into the subjects they study, developing a comprehensive understanding that goes beyond mere memorization. By nurturing a genuine curiosity for learning, students will be better equipped to apply their knowledge and think critically.

In addition to language and subject knowledge, schools should emphasize the development of soft skills and personal traits. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are crucial in today's interconnected world. Honesty and integrity should be instilled as core values, guiding students to act ethically and responsibly. Teamwork, interpersonal skills, analytical thinking, organizational abilities, and creativity should also be nurtured, equipping students with essential skills for success in various spheres of life.

The Role of Teachers, Students, and Parents

Transforming the education system requires a collective effort from teachers, students, and parents. Teachers must adopt innovative teaching methods that foster a love for learning and encourage students to think critically. They should be facilitators, guiding students on their quest for knowledge and helping them develop their character.

Students, on the other hand, need to actively engage in the learning process. They should seek to understand concepts, ask questions, and apply their knowledge to real-life situations. By taking responsibility for their own education, students become active participants in their learning journey.

Parents play a vital role in supporting and encouraging their children's education. They should actively collaborate with teachers, providing a nurturing environment at home that reinforces the values and skills taught at school. Parents should also foster a love for reading and learning, inspiring their children to become lifelong learners.

Conclusion

By redefining the purpose of education and transforming our schools, we can create a society of morally upright and competent individuals. Education should go beyond the mere acquisition of knowledge and instead focus on developing character and competence. By prioritizing language skills, deep understanding of subjects, and fostering essential soft skills, we equip students with the tools they need to thrive in today's world. Let us collectively work towards a holistic education system that empowers individuals and transforms our nation for the better.

Sir, its good that you are teaching in LUMS. I have a suggestion that can you please record your lectures in LUMS and upload on your YouTube channel so that those students who cannot afford LUMS can also get benefit from your lectures. You can also encourage other like minded teachers to follow your footsteps. JAZAKALLAH.

Main hamesha ye sochta hon k. 5th, 8th and 10th level par aik central education level testing exam hona chahyeh.

Hamaray pas yeh system hay magar unko re-asses karne ki zaroorat hay. Hamara Exam style concepts based bananay ki zarorat hay. Instead of ratta based

Jab assessment body strong ho jaye gi tu school or teacher uski lehaz say align ho jainge.

Nowadays, quality of education is not a problem, a lot of resources are available from which you acquire stem education such as Coursera, YouTube, Edx, and Edureka to name a few, Quality of the learning environment and an atmosphere for growth are much bigger problems, you cannot expect from the brain to think critically about something that requires a lot of mental energy when it's constantly in a state of worry and tension.

Dr. Taimur sahb, apki face expressions ye saaf show kar rahy hain k ye apka favorite topic tha. Ap wait kar rahay thay k kab chance milega is topic par baat karny ka. Thanks for your lovely thoughts. I totally agree with you. But we all have to play our part. Slowly and steady wins the race.

You a re very right ! Even a great scholar may not be a good teacher. Our daughter once had a math. gold medallist for a teacher in high school who could not make the children understand her subject. She may have been more suited to university level.
