I keep getting Denisov and Dolokhov mixed up too. For me, I really loved the way Tolstoy captured that feeling of youth and joy when we return to the Rostovs in this section. It just felt so exciting and life-affirming!

Oh, I hope you feel better. Allergies can be so miserable. I visited a horse boarding farm with my sister-in-law recently. She has a horse there. There was another horse that put its face right against mine and wanted to be cuddled. It was so sweet. Afterwards, my eyes were so red, especially the one that had touched the horse's face. I think that counted as a skin test. From your description of War and Peace as a soap opera, I can understand why I never "got" it. Those types of stories have never been as relatable to me as they are to others. I feel pushed to the outside of my own social circles when obnoxious people put on dramatic shows that I could never match unless very, very upset. It exacerbates the awkwardness, loneliness, and boredom I already feel in large groups. I'm making progress on that score though. Perhaps, if I read it again, I'd find a character who feels similarly.
