Grundy vs Bustino | The Race Of The Century - 1975 King George

On the 40th anniversary of Grundy’s famous defeat of Bustino in the 1975 King George, race sponsors QIPCO and Ascot Racecourse are celebrating “the race of the century” and denoting it the inaugural recipient of a new award entitled “QIPCO King George Diamonds & Pearls," which will annually honour a vintage running of the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

To mark the anniversary of the race and the first “Diamonds & Pearls” Award, QIPCO and Ascot commissioned a new three-minute film featuring original archive footage of the famous race together with newly recorded interviews with Grundy’s trainer, Peter Walwyn, and Bustino’s jockey, Joe Mercer.

Ascot Racecourse is synonymous with quality, excellence and a truly memorable day out. The highlight of the year is Royal Ascot in June with five days of tradition, pageantry and style.

Outside of Royal Ascot spectacular racing takes place throughout the year, each raceday offering a unique theme and atmosphere.

Grundy was a true great and Dick Hern was not just a great trainer but a true tactician, he knew the art of using a pacemaker, just a pity not many trainers now seem to use pacemakers so much.

I remember this race like it was yesterday. Grundy had incredible heart, stamina and sheer willpower, plus the Look of Eagles. A gorgeous colt!

Pat Eddery died 10.11.2015 . Forty years ago he rode Grundy to beat Bustino at Ascot .The greatest ever race .Thanks for Memory Pat Eddery

The 1986 Arc was imo the best race I have ever seen, taking nothing away from Grundy and Bustino, but Dancing Brave in that Arc, magical.
