i really hope your wrong. 4 years building the same robot teaches very little in comparison to what we have now. also just sounds boring.

Even though I honestly really hope this doesn’t happen (especially coming from FTC), I feel like it’s a real possibility. I think it also helps FIRST differentiate themselves more from VEX than they do currently... but I just feel like it removes a lot of the fun if the game is similar year over year, with teams just recycling old bots instead of taking the time to build new ones.

Edit: This is also coming from a really low budget team that admittedly hasn't had much success. We would theoretically benefit from something like this, but something about changing the game each season levels the playing field (pun intended).

I think it makes sense for 2021 due to the Pandemic, but to do it year after year would not be a good idea. It will get old very quickly, and it makes the roll of the drive team hyper important, to the determent of others in the program imo. The difference between this and traditional sports, and even esports is that everyone gets to be on the field. In this case, everyone helps with the creation, but only so many people get to interact with the field and I think that would turn FRC from an engineering challenge into a driving challenge which I just disagree with.

New fields each year are FANTASTIC! It keeps it fresh. Repeating a field would lose a lot of participants.

I hope you’re right. Trying to get funding for 2021 after all this mess will be a HUGE challenge for FRC teams.

Probably a lot of human player interaction.

I hope that whatever the game piece is, there will not be a shortage of them.

All of the elements of Infinite Recharge have been present in past games. I also thought that robots couldn't have parts on them that were designed and built outside of build season. Am I mis-remembering that rule?

This would be a huge help to cost. We are a small rural school that can't always do big things.

I agree with those who say that we hope that you are wrong. If it's basically the same game every year, then it doesn't feel very innovative. It doesn't feel like there is much to build if it's the same game every year. Pretty soon it will be like VEX where everyone changes their robot to the same bot design. Again not innovative. The cost savings are minimal if we still have to pay $5K for registration/KOP and @ $3K for lodging bills. Those are the biggest line items in our budget.

What if its called infinite recharge because its played an infinite number of times?🤔

Theory: The 2021 game is going to be an updated version of infinite recharge BUT with a few changes.

It is interesting that they do not reveal the names of the individual competitions for the coming year like they have in the past.

Now we know...
"The ongoing impact of the pandemic presents significant and unprecedented challenges for all, including our community. Recognizing these challenges, including the need to minimize team total participation costs, and the fact that nearly half of the FIRST Robotics Competition Teams were unable to play the 2020 game due to the disruption of the season, FIRST has determined that the 2020 INFINITE RECHARGE game will be replayed for the 2021 FIRST® GAME CHANGERS, powered by Star Wars: Force for Change season. Over the next few months the Game Design Team will be looking at adjustments to the game, all of which you will learn about at Kickoff in 2021."

I think it would be cool if we didn't have a tradition drivetrain (or maybe could only do certain game aspects by using some other form of locomotion). Just an example would be like 2010. Imagine if instead of just bumps, they were untraversable walls. Above these walls were stationary bars such as the ones on the Generator Switch. In order to successfully cross the field, the robot would have to hang onto the bar and slide across it. Many teams already have the R&D into moving across a bar just as this one.

Lmao have fun with a two legged bot that can kick a soccerball

Didn’t the FTC field get leaked tho? It looked like a frisbee game

I'd like to see FIRST move to just changing an aspect of the game each year. I know many would be against this but like mentioned it would help with funding, legitimizing FIRST, and it would be more in line with how irl jobs in robotics work.
