This guy has been fantastic in introducing the Oud.

One thing he told me that has really struck me as profound was his explanation of the Oud as an extension of our primary instrument, that is our voice, but one we sing through our hands with.

The idea of the Oud being a part of my voice means that if I can sing it, I can play it, which actually demystified the lack of frets for me.

Anyway, my first maquamat (partial scale) will be Maquamat Hijaz, and if anyone is interested in exploring arabic music, I cannot recommend this teacher enough

Big love

Let s start a Makam Forum to discuss theory & practice in the Makam World...including Byzantine Modes or echoi. Thumbs up and Applause for Navid who has put effort and time in teaching the Makam System, an important system of microtonal music. Tolgahan Çoğulu from Turkey is promoting a microtonal guitar with movable frets. Now there is also a microtonal keyboard whose keys make up to three sounds depending on what portion of the key you press. These are important news in microtonal music practice.

Wow! Man, thanx for sharing such a knowledge. Just singing those "strange phrases", as my first music teache classsified me Asian music, created a definite feeling that it is now possible to memorize the right ones.
Also I liked your saying "You don't have to be a best singer, just do your best". I liked it quite a lot.

This video is really really good. I usually sing the notes as "sa ri ga ma pa dha ni sa" or "do re mi (movable do or fixed do)."

Now I wish I had an Oud.
Love persian music, especially this instrument and love the way you are teaching it.
I teach guitar in a very similar way.
I do own a fretless guitar.

I was trying to improvise in Hijaz looking at the wrongly written notes that were not giving the difference between the ascending & the descending sequences. The book I was using is for the even tempered Greek bouzouki.. luckily E. Voulgaris presents microtonal makam theory in Greek. Murat Aydemir presents Turkish makams in their tonal division based on the 34 pitches per octave. His book is in English. The difference between Turkish and Arabic tonal systems is Visible on two neys from the two cultures and on two kanuns from the two cultures. Turkish kanuns have more levers/mandals under each triplet of strings for each note.

Many Thanks cannot read music, so have been looking for the " simple tab " for the various maqams. I can actually see what notes you are hitting in the Maqam. I have looked everywhere for this just like the scales for the guitar, Dorian being one of my favorites!. This is an old video but one I am glad I found. Thanks again

So the hijaz scale (starting from D) is D - Eb - F# - G- A- then a quarter-tone between Bb and B - C - D?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Could you help me with this doubt...
I hear a different sound (sharper) of the note A when you play all the notes at minute 2.34, compared with the same A note that you played at the begining of the video...

Thanks again
