Northern Lights: Timelapse captures Aurora Borealis illuminating the night sky around the world

The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, lit up the night sky in several countries around the world on Friday evening.

The beautiful spectacle is a result of electrically charged particles from the sun entering the Earth's atmosphere.

The lights were visible to large swathes of North America and Europe and were a result of an ongoing "extreme" geomagnetic storm, the first such classification since October 2003, according to the U.S.-based Space Weather Prediction Center.

I watched for just over an hour and there was about 10 min where it was really kind of dancing and changed colors from green to purple/pink. It was worth it to wait for seeing that part, it kind of came and went as far as how bright it was, amazing experience to see though for sure recommend trying to watch it!

Aurora Borealis!? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within your kitchen!?

All I could see was a faintly pinkish glow in the northern sky. I think there is just too much light pollution where I live, the San Francisco Bay Area, a metropolis of almost 10 million souls. I didn’t see any advance notice, or I would have planned to go to a more rural location and a higher elevation, perhaps up Mt. Tamalpais, to view this amazing natural phenomenon. I never knew it might be possible to see the Aurora Borealis from my latitude, about 38 degrees North. I heard yesterday, Saturday, on the news, that the effects could be better captured with cell-phone photos, but I didn’t know of that at the time of viewing. I’m enjoying all the footage and photos, though, thank you everyone. It’s been a great time recently for astrological/meteoroloical events, first the solar eclipse, now this!

Don’t you think that in photographs this phenomenon is more beautiful than in life?

I saw thtrm in Northern Alberta last night. We get the northern lights fairly regularly here every summer. But last night was the best ones I've ever seen in my life. Green, purple, and yellow all together dancing against a clear night sky.
