The examples I use in the video are made up by me.
1) Function Questions
Function questions belong to Author’s Meaning Questions. They ask you about the function of something the author states. There are two types of function questions in TOEFL Reading. Type 1 asks you about the function of an idea that is stated in the passage. Type 2 asks you about the rhetorical function of something.
Use these strategies to solve function questions in TOEFL Reading: For type 1, read the passage closely and have a look at the context. Then ask yourself: Why does the author do that? For type 2, eliminate those answers that do not appear in the passage first. Then have a look at the remaining answers and ask yourself: Does the writer do that in order to show that? If you use these strategies for TOEFL Reading, it will be easier for you to figure out the correct answer and improve your TOEFL Reading score.
2) Paraphrasing Questions
Paraphrasing questions also belong to Author’s Meaning Questions. You are given a sentence from the passage and then you are asked to find the answer that best expresses the information given in this sentence.
Use this strategy to solve paraphrasing questions in TOEFL Reading: first, read the first answer choice and ask yourself: Does this sentence express the same meaning as the highlighted sentence? If it does not, you can eliminate it immediately. If it does, go on and have a look at the other answer choices and figure out whether they express the meaning of the sentence given better. If you use this strategy for paraphrasing questions in TOEFL Reading, it will be a lot easier for you to figure out the correct answer.
3) Inference Questions
Inference questions in TOEFL Reading ask you about the implied meaning of something that is stated by the author. This means that the answer is not directly stated in the passage, rather you have to derive it from what is being said.
Use this strategy to solve inference questions in TOEFL Reading: First, have a look at the passage and ask yourself: What is the general idea of the passage? After that have a closer look at the statement in question and ask yourself: If I were the writer, why would I say that? This strategy for TOEFL Reading is extremely powerful because it enables you to find the correct answer quickly. If you know the general idea of the passage, that is, why the writer writes this passage, it is a lot easier to find out why the writer states something.
