Union Pacific steam locomotive number 4014 is considered to be one of the largest locomotives ever built. It was one of 25 “Big Boy” locomotives but for the Union Pacific Railroad between 1941 and 1944 by the American Locomotive Company. In 2013, the Union Pacific made a deal with the Rail Giants Train Museum in Pomona, California to reacquire locomotive 4014 and restore it to operation as part of a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 2019. Come along as wee see the first test run of locomotive 4014 as well as its first excursion to Ogden, Utah and return. All aboard!

Imagine being the guy to tug on that whistle for the first time since it's restoration, couldn't imagine how much of a rush that would give you.

If my dad were still alive today, he'd absolutely adore this video. He loved steam locomotives, giving a bit of that love to me.

In 1959, on a trip out west, I convinced my family (12 yr old sister) and my cousin’s family (10 and 12 yr old sisters) to stop at the UP Cheyenne yard to see the majority of the Big Boys and Challengers gathered prior to scraping. My dad, who had worked for Southern Coal Co., and I were big RR nuts. The girls complained all the way from Tennessee that it would be “boring”, but… to this day they still talk about the experience. The yard manager allowed us to wander among the giants for hours, climbing in the cabs, advancing the throttle, puling the brakes and horns. I don’t recall the count but believe there were 10 or so Big Boys and a few Challengers. At the time I could have bought a bell from one of them for $75. I had the money from cutting yards but couldn’t part with it. Biggest mistake of my life! Now I’ve got to see one running.

Thank goodness people out there had the foresight to preserve these pieces of not only railroad history, but American history. Generations will now be able to enjoy this sight.

I’m so proud of this community
I also appreciate how hard Union Pacific is working to preserve its heritage by bringing this giant iron horse back into service.

Imagine driving down the highway the morning big boy was out and seeing that massive thing by accident. I love how powerful the steam plumes are.

This is truly amazing that UP “Big Boy” is in operation again after over 60 years. When I first learned about the locomotive, I was amazed. Great video btw.

Back on the 70's we had a great uncle who lived with us until his passing..He was born in 1901, he had this HUGE dip in the top of his head, said he got it when he was 4 because he fell asleep along the tracks and the caboose step clipped him..His family was surprised he survived..BUT he would put his hands to his mouth and blow in such a way saying that's what a steam train sounded like..We thought it was cool back then. YEARS later one rolled through the town I lived in..When that whistle went all it did was bring back memories..He had hit it PERFECTLY..

This was one of the best days of my life; the Big Boy, the engine I had loved my entire life, began its first excursion on the day of my birth. I wasnt able to see it, but I was so overjoyed, that I couldnt sit still the entire day.

I think it's fantastic that Union Pacific has restored some of these amazing machines. I just got to see Big Boy go through my town today. It was a major event, hundreds and hundreds of people came out to see it and I got to spend a really nice day with my dad doing some train watching.

I am happy to say I was part of the crowd. Scoped out various sites in Echo and Weber Canyon before the event. Weather turned blah so I walked from my home in Midvale and took Trax to Frontrunner. End of the line was Ogden Station with 844 & 4014 parked nose to nose. What a beautiful sight to see these trains together. Got to say 844 is my favorite.

Today Nov 16 2019 my dad and I witnessed this magnificent steam engine in Nowata Oklahoma. And it was an absolute joy of a time. Getting to spend the 30 minutes of my life with this thing in near arms reach (but did not touch because it was HOT!) was amazing, gratifying, and just all around worth the time to stand around and wait for it to stop in and show off it's majestic self. I loved it.

A HUGE thanks to UP, who made considerable resources available for this project. As a shareholder, I'm thrilled to see some money going into history, rather than already-rich people's pockets!

Its just a work of art, as a child in Australia I loved to watch the steam trains run past my school at Wallerawang NSW, regards and respect to all from Australia.

Magnificent! Hat's off to every single person at UPRC responsible for bringing 4014 back into service. Steam locomotives....people love them. Why did they ever take them away? Beautiful steam engineering in motion. Cannot be matched. I know....my grandfathers and uncles almost all steam locomotive engine men.
