What are BLACK Companies in Japan? #Shorts

●How can we avoid working at such a company in Japan?

The situation of the harsh working environments in Japan can be seen in the number of companies called ブラック企業 Black Companies.

The characteristics of such companies are…

1. Long working hours (50~100 hours of overtime per month)
2. Very few or hardly any days off (less than 80 days a year)
3. Low salary (under the minimum wage)
4. No pay for overtime
5. Several kinds of harassment

Why does Japan have so many horrible companies?

1. Remnants of “the period of high economic growth”
2. The importance of keeping harmony
3. The intensifying competition rate for regular employees

There was once a period of high economic growth (1955~72) of mass production/consumption, in which the more you worked, the more money you could make.

Since the generation of workers that experienced this period is now the bosses/superiors, they still linger onto the incorrect mindset that working long hours is a virtue.

In addition to this, because Japan is a collectivist society, it puts the survival of the organization and superiors before the rights/health of individuals.

Finally, students who graduated college want to work as full-time employees, but the number of available positions is decreasing every year. Therefore, there are many people who have no choice but to continue working even though they know it is a black company.

Japan is suffering the most severe case of an aging population in the world, and yet this kind of working environment that is killing the young is still continuing. I believe actions must be taken immediately in order to change the current situation.

Honestly, they want people to have kids. Then they need to give the time for people to have kids! And the money. Make it an option for the regular person. Everywhere can benefit that honestly.

This was a part of a paper I did years ago in college. Part of the harassment is women who take maternity leave and get shunned when they return to work. Or if they leave at the normal time to take care of their children. Some end up leaving to just stay home to take care of the children but with crappy pay, that’s often not possible. Hence, the low birth rate.

The Japanese have such a beautiful culture, but they seem to be slow to implement necessary change which seems to be contributing to a decline.

I so love your videos, showing the dark side of Japan that the weeaboos always ignore because they love anime so much.

Even though, I have a lot of admiration for Japan, I feel like they're by far the most stubborn society of all time. They are impossibly slow to change, for better or worse.

America has the National Labor Relations Board and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to oversee employee rights to fair compensation and a safe work environment. Does Japan not have something similar, or is it just ignored / left without power?

This was a very informative video on work culture in Japan (and, frankly, I think it's generally informative of why a lot of companies like this exist across the world)

Thank you Shogo. I sometimes feel like you're such a great activist because your videos always give depth into the topics, even if they are uncomfortable topics people avoid to address.

Believe it or not phenomena specific to a nation is usually a product of the people and culture

Couldn't companies just do away with the crazy overtime and give decent rest to ppl and hire more ppl instead, that would solve 2 problems at once.

I wonder what has to happen for these things to change because it feels like we’ve been hearing about harsh working conditions and high rates of suicide amongst Japanese workers and students for decades but nothing seems to happen other than people just kind of talking about it in the same way

They really need to grow a spine. If the individual suffers especially in such large quantities then it negatively affects the whole.

I love how there are so many people who only know about Japan from watching a ton of anime, and they don't realize how freaking messed up and dystopian it actually can get.

I wondered this, thank you for explaining!

Question: does Japanese have the letter "L", or a "L" sound?

That seems to be a very serious problem for the youth over there !
