Darn that dream
I dream each night
You say you love me and hold me tight
But when I awake and you're out of sight
Oh, darn that dream
Darn your lips and darn your eyes
They lift me high above the moonlit sky
Then I tumble out of paradise
Oh, darn that dream
Darn that one track mind of mine
It can't understand that you don't care
Just to change the mood I'm in
I'd welcome a nice old nightmare
Darn that dream
And bless it too
Without that dream I never have you
But it haunts me and it won't come true
Oh, darn that dream

Nothing better. For all the jadedness of her voice here, the song retains its beauty and romanticism. I like Dinah and Harold Land very much, but Billie kills it. Brava!

She can place you right in the area that she was singing at along with cigarette smoke, champagne, instruments and all. You're the greatest "Lady Day".

It sounds to me as if Ella Fitzgerald sang from her mouth, but Billie from her heart.
And more..Billie is as well phrasing with her vocal, just as Chet Baker with his vulnerable trumpet.

My fav' version of this by far...love Harry "Sweets" Edison on this as at this time he was shuttling between sideman gigs for Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and claiming to play with the 3 greatest singers of the 20th Century?

Man, she sounds better here than her '30s-'40s prime. She seems to have gotten better towards the end.
