This is also what made wolves ideal companions to humans: We are also extremely versatile, but also are built to handle far travels AND capable of extreme exhaustion-based hunting. In fact some evidence suggests we are the only species BETTER adapted to that than wolves. Of course these days hardly anyone hunts like that anymore, but some tribes still do. Basically following an antelope for hours and hours until it days of exhaustion.

My friend had a cat and a dog. The cat was older than the dog and the dog was brought in when he was a puppy. Instead of attacking the dog, the cat actually took care of the puppy such as grooming or snuggling with it. Even when she gave birth to 3 kittens a few months later, she still treat the puppy like its own baby

Big cats are under more extinction pressure around the world due to the hunting of them for their fur. Also, In ancient times lions lived throughout the Middle East and Southern Europe but they were wiped out by humans including for sport. So it is not a level playing field between wild dogs and cats.

Seems the solution is simple: Breed a catdog: A creature with the retractable claws and excellent tree climbing ability of a cat and the intelligence and social abilities of a dog. If it's omnivorous instead of being an obligate carnivore then it would be even better. It could be an ambush predator or a pack hunter. However, it needs to be no bigger than a wolf, so that humans could control it.
