After World War I, Enzo Ferrari pursued a career in the automotive industry and initially applied for a position with Fiat, then Italy’s premier car manufacturer. When Fiat turned him down, he sought other options and eventually secured a role as a test driver with Costruzioni Meccaniche Nazionali (CMN), a smaller company based in Milan. This job provided him with valuable experience and connections in the racing industry, setting the foundation for his later achievements with Alfa Romeo and the establishment of Scuderia Ferrari, which would grow into the renowned Ferrari brand.
In 1963, Ferruccio Lamborghini, dissatisfied with the clutch performance of his Ferrari, approached Enzo Ferrari with suggestions for improvement. Ferrari dismissed him, famously advising him to "stick to making tractors." Offended yet resolute, Lamborghini decided to create his own line of sports cars, aiming to outclass Ferrari in both performance and quality. This pivotal moment led to the birth of the Lamborghini brand, which would become a major force in the luxury sports car world.
Horacio Pagani’s career shifted dramatically when Renault hired him to improve a racing car’s bodywork, where he demonstrated his skills with substantial upgrades. In 1982, he moved to Italy to work for Lamborghini, starting with basic tasks but rising to chief engineer, eventually developing the Countach Evoluzione concept. When Lamborghini dismissed his suggestion to invest in an autoclave for carbon fiber production—reasoning they didn’t need one since Ferrari didn’t—Pagani purchased his own in 1987. Frustrated by Lamborghini's resistance to innovation, he left in 1991 to establish Modena Design, founding Pagani Automobili Modena the following year. His work would lead to the creation of the iconic Zonda and Huayra supercars after years of dedicated development.
