The Importance Of Trust In Business | Why Improving Employee Engagement Is KEY

Today I’m talking with fellow business coach Karie Kaufmann about the importance of trust in business. As you’ll see, trust pervades every aspect of an organization and thus, improving employee engagement is essential to reducing employee turnover.

Trust is crucial because when it comes down to it, it’s at the core of every problem that arises in business.

When trust is broken, it hurts performance. About 2/3 of employees are passively, if not actively, job searching. When you have so many employees thinking about going to other companies, it shows that trust is not strong.

In past generations, there was a mentality that drove people to stay in a job once they had it. Now, there’s a lot more turnover. People don’t feel as compelled to stay in a job just for the sake of staying.

One thing that you can do to start improving employee engagement is to maintain clarity in your organization. Beyond recognizing the importance of trust in business, you also need to be able to show your people what it is they should be trusting in. If you continually ask “how,” it can help you to delve deep into what needs to be done.

Rather than saying that something just needs to be done, say HOW it needs to be done so that employees know exactly what to do.

Feedback is also very important. Aside from performance evaluations, make sure that you’re present in the workplace. Your body language should make it clear that you’re fully invested in whatever is going on.

It’s also crucial to build strong relationships with your team members. Let them know that you value their contributions. As long as your team is happy, they’ll be productive.

By keeping these things in mind, you can start improving employee engagement in the workplace and reduce turnover. If you stay conscious of the importance of trust in business, you can boost employee loyalty and ultimately help your bottom-line.

ABOUT PETER BOOLKAH
--------------------
Hi, I’m Peter Boolkah, business coach, keynote speaker and winner of over 32 major coaching awards.

I know how difficult running a business can be and how overwhelming it can feel when things aren’t going right. One thing I tell my clients is never stop believing in your dreams. Even if you feel your business is wearing you down, you can always find a way to reverse the trend and get back in the game.

Many of the entrepreneurs I work with are great leaders and innovators. However, their businesses lack structure, systems and management. If you don’t have all these parts working in harmony, your business won’t reach its potential. Whether the ultimate goal is to keep or sell your business, you want to see growth year-on-year.

My transition into business coaching came after spending 15 years at McDonald’s. Working for one of the world’s biggest corporate brands exposed me to all aspects of business and gave me the skills and experience to establish my own company.

I know that many entrepreneurs learn by trial and error, but unless you have an endless stream of capital behind you, your chance of success is rare. You often need someone experienced who can analyse your business objectively and put emotions aside when big decisions need to be made.

I’ve been lucky enough to assist many like-minded business owners. These are people who use their success to help those less fortunate. I’ve found that supporting a charity, like B1G1, has given me even more motivation to succeed. It’s wonderful to know that when my business is doing well, many people have the opportunity to live a better life.

Genuine relationships. If you care about your employees, they'll care too.

The sad fact is that loyalty is indeed decreasing. My parents both worked for one company until they retired. That just doesn't happen now.
