Simplifying Hand Sculptures

To create quick hand gesture studies in clay it's a good idea to use the "middles, pinky, & thumb" technique. Start by sculpting the forearm and the middle three fingers as a simplified, stretched teardrop shape. Next, add the thumb and pinky using basic shapes—a flattened drumstick for the thumb and a bowling pin for the pinky. Finally, block out the fingers, indicating knuckles and padding. Aim for simplicity and complete each study in about 20-30 minutes.

I never had such a formal explanation of how to form a hand but thats basically how Ive always drawn hands. I had to have picked it up from somewhere, probably subconsciously noticing other artists used that same approach.
