Types of Computer Network

There are Various types of computer Networks.

The type of network depends on the size of network, and the purpose of networks.

Based on the size of a Computer Network, there are three types of computer Networks.
LAN , MAN and WAN.

LAN stands for the Local Area Network, that means a network which is used to connect all the local computers. If you have a computer or a mobile device which are sharing one internet connection in your home, then it is know as PAN i.e. personal area network and sometime it is also referred as Home Area Network.

Now LAN can connect few computers to several computers as well as servers, printers and more devices. A good example of LAN is your Office, where all the computers are connected with Ethernet cable.

Sometimes Local Area Networks are completely wireless, in that case they are known as WLAN, Wireless Local Area Networks.

Now another category is Metropolitan Area Networks. Those networks which are laid in different parts of city or connect two or more branches of offices, hospitals or any other institution between two or more big cities, then this type of computer network is known as Metropolitan Area Network.

This is practised in Universities, hospitals etc to share info securely.

Now then third and most used one is Wide Area Network. And Internet is the example of WAN. In this type of network, a lot of different networks from the globe are connected with each other.

Now special purpose networks are those computer networks, which are used for some special purpose, Such as SAN, VPN and EPN

SAN stands for storage area networks. Such type of networks are used in companies where a large data is stored and managed. In this network type that data is not open to the computers on local area networks.

EPN stands for Enterprise Private Network and is used in Companies to connect their different offices to their head offices without going to the internet.

VPN stands for Virtual Private Networks. This type of private network use internet to connect computers. But before making a connection it encrypts the connection and is very secured.

So these were some types of computer networks.

Mr. Juan is a small business man that runs a company that sells computer hardware. He have been experience problem with his accounting department which be depends on to provide him with the sales reports. Mr. Juan wants to be able to shared information between his computer and the six (6) computer station of the accounting department and have a central printing area.

QUESTION: Which type if network would you recommend to Mr. Juan and why?
