Building a MASSIVE Entertainment Center

This basement living room has been something we've wanted to tackle for a year or so now. We finally bit the bullet and started planning out our built in entertainment center. With an 85in TV and such a large wall I knew right away that this entertainment center was going to be massive. After measuring out the space and coming up with a plan we settled on a 15 foot long unit with lower cabinets and bookcases surrounding the TV. This will end up being the perfect place to store blankets, toys and board games. Time to go get lots of plywood!

I like this build a lot.
But a tip from my experience, when you glue boards together, it increases the strength of the bond if you spread the glue evenly onto both surfaces. This way your glue gets pressed into every nook and cranny better.
Clamping it, for some reason, (explained in another video I saw) it increases the strength even more.
Hope this helps.

Wow, this is exactly the help I needed for a project that I’m working on! The explicit details were a big help. 😃

We've been talking about building one in our basement. I love the look of this one. We live in your area, so I'll keep the door guys in mind. They did a great job on them. Cool video, thanks!

I built a very similar entertainment center in our house, but I wish I had done a few things differently. 1) I wish I had built in an open space below the center counter for a center channel speaker. Instead, it's sitting on the counter below the TV. While this works, it's a bit large and imposing (and doesn't go over well w/ my family). 2) I wish I had built up the upper center shelf (spanning the two bookcases) to support more weight. We use it as record storage, and obviously they weight a ton. And while it's quite strong, I'm a bit nervous to add many more than we currently have in there (i.e. ~2/3's full or ~100lbs). 3) I wish I had cut and installed outlets in the base/side of each bookcase.

I'm having trouble with project quotes, I've built large cabinetry for most of my life, but it's always been for family or myself and smaller projects for outside the family so money has never really been an issue until now. This project is a wall entertainment center about 126 " x 23.5" x 8'. It's going to hold a large screen TV two huge side speakers two bottom base speakers and four doors on the bottom with two of those doors having pull out drawers, using birch plywood and poplar trim. I've seen in store prices range from 1, 000 to 5, 000 with non-solid wood structure so I haven't found any pattern to price projects, I did see that cabinet makers in Texas make about $20 an hour which seems like it should be double that, so I'm just unsure of the method to come up with a reasonable quote.

We're getting ready to build cabinets around our television right now. Did you put audio visual components in those cupboards or drawers? We're looking for some build instructions on Incorporating outlets inside the cabinets, how to hide the cords, And how to dissipate the heat.

Nice job! Most of the drawer faces I've used in the past were independently screwed from the back of the drawer box front using short screws in two to four places, in addition to the handle holding, and that was for small drawers.

very the spacing and measurements are top notch considering it's such a massive built-in!

Looks great. You may have an issue with your floor however as the large unit built on top of it will restrict its movement. It’s better to cut the floor out below the unit and leave a 10mm gap to allow for expansion which is covered by the trim along the bottom.

Im almost done building mine. I went with 3 openings instead of 4. I have everything screwed in and I just finished wood filling the whole thing so all that's left for me is paint

Fabulous job and team work. High spec finish which I like. It’s given me some inspiration for our living room. We are in a bungalow and need our living room updating. Our conundrum is we have a wide chimney breast with two good sized alcoves. I envision built in units similar to yours but one side above base unit I want the 50” TV on an extendable tilting bracket that goes flush against the wall when not in use with the cables hidden so it looks aesthetically pleasing. I know what I would like….just don’t know how. Do you have any examples of such a project? Thank you for sharing 👍🏻🛠🧰

I see you installed the cabinets directly on top of what looks like vinyl flooring? You're not supposed to do that but I really don't want to have to cut my vinyl flooring to install my cabinets.
