Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox is fairly well known as it is one of the last major surrenders of the Civil War, and even is marked as the end. But why exactly did General Lee surrender at this specific location in Virginia? In This American Civil War video I will give you a bit more insight of what was occurring during the last days of General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.

Out of food. Out of water. Out of ammunition. Out of men willing to fight. Outnumbered 5 to 1. Seems pretty obvious to me.

He had no other options, he was virtually surrounded with Sheridan ready to commence a slaughter

Some of his officers suggested disbanding the army and starting guerrilla warfare. He disregarded the ideia. He knew that would cause more destruction, death, overall chaos, with no real chance of success... Hello from São Paulo, Brazil 🇧🇷

One thing I love about this meeting was how respectful Grant and Lee were with each other.

Fun fact. The last confederate general to surrender was Stand Watie in Oklahoma on June 23rd 1865.

The issue is more why the rest of the Confederacy has not yet surrendered.

when Lee was meeting to surrender, one of Grants staff officers was a native American, and Lee said something to the effect that he was glad to see a real American present there...

I’m glad you made it clear that really only had two choices in that moment - surrender, or a “glorious” sacrifice of the rest of his men. He made the right choice to give up.

He understood that the war was lost and saw no reason to get any more men killed.

Lee didn't surrender at THE Appomattox Courthouse. The TOWN was called Appomattox Courthouse.

No mention of the Battle of Saylor's Creek on April 6th, which saw the loss of 8, 000 Confederates (including Lee's own son who became a prisoner) plus the fact that men were leaving the ranks of the ANV every day and going home of their own accord.

When Lee surrendered Gen Kirby-Smith still controlled sll of Texas and much of the Western theater, but he chose to surrender with Lee. While "Juneteenth" is celebrated to commemorate that event, the last Confederate army to surrender were the Cherokee led by Confederate General Chief Stand Watie.

Lee's troops were starving, and his Army's Administration screwed up and sent a train full of arms instead the needed train full of food.

In other words, General Lee was checkmated.

Grant had been suffering from a migraine which suddenly lifted when he heard Lee was waiting to discuss surrender.

Because Grant, Meade, and Sherman did what McClellan should have been done at the beginning of the war

The illustration at the beginning shows Grant in a nice uniform. Wasn't Grant wearing an old ratty coat without rank insignia? Later in the video, there's a complete explanation.

Why Lee surrendered at Appomattox? ‘Cause Kansas City was too far to walk? He promised his wife he’d be back with the evening paper? They had a really good IHOP there? But, seriously, folks….
