Building an Off Grid Yurt Part 1: Layout of a Round House

We finally have the green light to start building our off the grid yurt! After cutting down our marker tree, that was also a danger tree, we were able to start working on laying out our own twist on a traditional "batter board" layout. It worked out quite well I think, though it took a little longer than we expected. Now we can start digging the footings for our post and pier foundation.

I need to formally apologize for taking so long on releasing this video. It has been a little bit rocky for us to get our heads on straight while learning how to build a house. I think we now have it settled and you can expect regular videos.

Be sure check out our other content.

Keep them coming, guys! I thought this video was great. Very well done and both interesting/educational as well as relaxing/entertaining. I know you guys are working hard and I always love to see new videos come up. It's so exciting to see the yurt building begin!

Great video. Glad you have the library for uploading that will make things easier. More commentary would be great but I love the music  Put the house hemlock up on some logs to dry and have it milled. Love the batter boards with the ax point stakes. You are on the way!

Good to hear from you. I'm glad things are getting underway. That's exciting. I think things could be combined, like the commentary about the 3-4-5 and the stakes could have gone where that video played and you'd have a more concise and coordinated video. Really great aerial shots. Everyone has a drone now...

I'm glad to see this yurt project started. You cannot imagine how much I'd like to live closer to give a hand on this build.

I have also to admit that you are scaring me with your axe. Yes, you made it to work and you could be fine for the rest of your life using it. These days, the single item tool mentality drives me crazy ("I want a single (insert the tool name here) that will fit every usage that I'll have." Good luck in your search to find that pair of pliers or that screwdriver...). My point is: get a smaller axe. Your double bit axe is fine for felling trees but it is far from being the perfect size for most of your chores.

Anyway, keep up your good work.

Hi I just found and subscribed to your channel! I also have a you tube Chanel, Itty Bitty Homestead! I am thinking of building a yurt for when guest and family come to stay with us. Thank you for filming your journey so that others may learn!🙂

Fun to watch. Might give this a go. Where are you building this?

Just a suggestion if you ever go back and edit these, Maybe consider cutting the music back to running in the background. (My husband is a sound engineer and he says getting sound right is a challenge for everyone, even the pros. :-)) With that said we love that we can easily hear you speak!
Thanks!

Commentaries are nice but good video sequences can describe more than any words. I was fine with today's format.

When you cut down the house hemlock you didn't seem to be using teh techniques I've seen recommended - you also seemed to be making your cut above your head - is this some training you've had to do it this way? Thanks!

What model yurt do you have? The 35ft or the 41ft?

Great video! Love the Drone!
Maybe you could have this over all video, then separate video on like how to cut down that tree, another video on the steps you took on running those strings (How to videos I guess). But this video was good!
BTW, how did you get the Hemlock stump out of the ground?

That music is annoying. Why Have music over the lovely rain sounds? Some sort of unwritten Youtube law that you have to put crappy music in to EVERYTHING?
