As the Safavid Empire was pressed by all sides, it weakened, creating a chaos that created several minor governments run by the Afghan Hotakis and other foreigners, among others. But it also lead to the rise of one of Persia's most notable leaders, the Türkic Nader Shah who fought dozens of battles to enlarge reunited the Iranian realm and remove the Ottoman and Russian invaders along with these smaller states. He became so powerful that he decided to depose the last members of the Safavid dynasty, which had ruled Iran for over 200 years, and become Shah himself in 1736. His numerous campaigns created a great empire that would be seen as the most recent height of Persian Civilization before the 20th Century.
