There is one more step. After the corn is cut up, the silage runs through a kernal processor -- a set of rollers that squash the kernels. Its a standard feature on high end self propelled choppers.This improves digestability and releases carbohydrates that aid in fermentation. And helps prevent feed sorting by the cows.
