My answer, as to what I think maths is:
The universe works on a logic, logic that 1+1 is 2, 2+1 is 3 and 3+1 is 4 etc (as Galileo said)
This logic is sometimes simple, and some times it is not so simple. So we have made an entire new language (symbols and stuff) to write down this complex language into a not so complex way. So that we can understand it better as well as explain it to other people who would also want to know this "logic" as to how things works.

Now how is it any different from other fields like physics and chemistry? Because in physics and chemistry our main goal is to understand how the universe works. If we were to find a new theory we would have to redefine our understanding of the universe in such a way that it fits in the newly found phenomenon.
On the other hand in maths, we have some axioms that we have just believed to be true (as we observed them in the real world) and then we use them to figure out every thing that you can do with it. it might or might not exist in the real world but our main goal is to develop new tools (like calculas, algebra, geometry, fractals, complex number and stuff) which might be used later on as we discover new phenomenons in science
Idk, this is how I understood it in school

I've always struggled with math. A young boy, who was very good at doing math, told me, "it's just another language. "
That really changed my approach to math, and I struggle far less now.

So math is an undeniable truth based on 5 assumptions?

Me and my friends debate if math was either discovered or invented. I think it was discovered what you guys think?

Maths is a fundamental ingredient of the universe

Numbers/Math is literally everything.. Everything is based on numbers to the point that is gets very creepy when you delve deep enough into it and start paying attention. Suddenly impossible things start to happen all based in time and numbers.

I think that you can define math as the study of the patterns in the universe. I too heard it from my teacher.

Very curious. He created the very concepts, but those concepts are based on what we’ve agreed upon, not necessarily what we know. What if you altered the premise? Has anyone tried? No, I’m not a mathematician - my brain won’t allow for it. But I get math. I can feel it. There’s a reality about it that is solid no matter what else changes. So that is why I am asking. What if we threw out all the assumptions and started looking for what we can’t see? What if we started from scratch; would we come to the same, or similar conclusions? Sorry, I just love thinking about things like this

Axioms are where the problems arise. Fundamentally they are assumptions. For instance, a curve in one dimension is a straight line in another.

Except it's not very precise when you get down to the nitty gritty. Because 0.999... (those ellipses means repeating infinitely)=1.000

1.000/3.000=0.333...
3.000/3.000=1.000
Right? So
(1/3)*3=1
0.333...*3=0.999...

Therefore 0.999...=1

Note this is different to saying (0.999=1). An infinite set that approaches as close as possible but never reaches 1. Is still equal to 1. That doubt still exists.

I have always wondered if our math would be different from an alien planet. I mean obviously 10+10 =20 but what if they have 7 fingers instead of 10? How would it be different?

That doesn't answer the question, just raises more questions.

Math is symbolic representation of empirical observation.

Math is Mathematics. The Pythagoreans used the word to describe 'the learners' (arithmetic and geometry) The Romans described it as 'the art of mathematics'. What is Mathematics?, a good question, art, science, truth, or a reflection of the human. Probably it is many things as it grows and takes on a life of its own.

But thats if your equation and values are correct. But if they aren't then your always going to get a different answer and isn't true. But a very good explanation certainly makes me think differently.
