MSI RTX 3090 (3080/3080Ti) VENTUS 3X thermal pads replacement with custom set (20 W/mK)

Walkthrough video showing the process of opening an MSI 3090 VENTUS 3X to replace the thermal pads with custom-size, high conductivity, thermal pads.

Procedure is the same for the 3080 and 3080Ti VENTUS 3X models.

You can get the custom GPU thermal pad sets from there:

Material used:
- Cleaning: Paper towel + 99% isopropyl alcohol
- Thermal pads: pre-cut, custom set, 20 W/m-K.
- Thermal paste: SYY 15.7 W/m-K paste

Results:
- Included in the video at the very end
- Memory temperature drop of ~10°C under load
- GPU core temperature reduced by 6°C

i bought 2 sets regently, 1 for a 3080 ti and 1 for a 3080 ... the 3080ti .. everything fit well ..and when mining my memory which was 96 degrees celcius went down to 86 ..awesome .... but the 3080 .. first thing i noticed was that the 4 thermal pads which were supposed to go around the processor area from the back plate were not thick enough (the old ones on it were 3mm, lucky i had some around to cut and make it). The difference i saw with the 3080ti, was that the normal 3080 backplate was flat all the way.. but from the 3080 ti were somewhat inwards at the processor area... concerning mining temperatures ..the 3080 went from 98 degrees to a constant 92 degrees... not a very big jump but i am glad with it .. moved away from the danger zone ... End result great prduct ..and because of the pre cuts, made things a whole lot easier for me...

On GPU's/laptop chips i use thick highly viscous paste like the SYY for better long term stability (SYY-157 / Shin-Etsu 7921-5, Thermagic ZF-EX, FuzeIce Plus. Old thick KPx was also great for laptops, new KPx is not) Thick paste is a good thing on hot GPU's and that's why manufactures use it for better long term stability. In the past i used the widely used MX-4 and other easy to spread pastes on laptops and cards but on high temperatures (especially 80+'c inside high-end laptops), temperature becomes higher after a couple of weeks and paste fully pumps out to the the edges with a puddle of silicones left on the chip, uniformity/flatness of the coldplate also plays a role for paste stability.

Not for 3080ti ventus I wasted money and temps went up 10c. Make sure you get 3mm pads for the 3080ti. Thanks kritical for the misinformation

Dude ngl finding the correct thickness for rtx 3080/3090 ventus really a headache
Some said 3mm some said 2mm (on the front side)

So i decide to measuret it myself
Front side all 2mm, there's 2 that using 1mm

For the backside for rtx 3080 msi ventus 3x it's 3mm and 2.5mm
And for rtx 3090 its 2mm
I assume bcos there's no vram n heatpipe on rtx3080 but the chassis similar between those 2

So judging from my measurements this is the most accurate one 👍

Again, if u wanna change thermalpad, make sure to double check the thickness from ur own card

So, does that mean the VRAMs right next to the Nvidia chipset (which touches the heatsink, opposite of the backplate) will have a 2mm thermal pad attached?

There is not much decrease in vram after pad change, 108-110 / 98 is not a good value, the result of pad change should be 80 vram, did you make a mistake in pad choice?

Help! I have 8 of these GPUs. Following your video, I successfully replaced the thermal pads on the first GPU with excellent results. Thank you! The second one didn't go so well. I am unable to set the core clock. Have you every experienced anything like this after a thermal pad upgrade? I would greatly appreciate any ideas you may have.

I also have the same brand gpu with 3080ti. And as the summer is coming my gpu fans started running with 95% from time to time. I am also planning to replace the original pads as you did.
Can you please clarify in written format, what thickness of pads we need? I am a little bit confused in the video.
So we need to order, "1mm", "1, 5mm", "2mm", "3mm".
4 different pad ticknesses, am I right?

Hey I'm having trouble with my FTW3 3090; getting no video output after thermal pad replacement wondering if incorrect thicknesses, 1 of the 3 fans goes up to 100% the other 2 Are normal.
