"Clear and Gentle Stream" is the fourth of Gerald Finzi's "Seven Part Songs", with words by Robert Bridges. It's tranquil lyricism is perfectly suited to the string transcription given it here by Harvey Brough.
It is played by the Aurora Orchestra, conducted by Nicholas Collon.

Clear and gentle stream !
Known and loved so long,
That hast heard the song,
And the idle dream
Of my boyish day ;
While I once again
Down thy margin stray,
In the selfsame strain
Still my voice is spent,
With my old lament,
And my idle dream,
Clear and gentle stream!

Where my old seat was
Here again I sit,
Where the long boughs knit
Over stream and grass
A translucent eaves:
Where back eddies play
Shipwreck with the leaves,
And the proud swans stray,
Sailing one by one
Out of stream and sun,
And the fish lie cool
In their chosen pool.

Many an afternoon
Of the summer day
Dreaming here I lay;
And I know how soon,
Idly at its hour,
First the deep bell hums
From the minster tower,
And then evening comes,
Creeping up the glade,
With her lengthening shade,
And the tardy boon,
Of her brightening moon.

Clear and gentle stream !
Ere again I go
Where thou dost not flow,
Well does it beseem
Thee to hear again
Once my youthful song,
That familiar strain
Silent now so long :
Be as I content
With my old lament,
And my idle dream,
Clear and gentle stream!

So often from Ralph Vaughn Williams, Butterworth to Finzi I hear the understandable pride of England’s beautiful countryside charms, I have enjoyed myself. Know this too, this music reaches out to many of us world travelers and we relate in our own humble way as well to this music in our own bucolic settings, our native landscapes, rural charms of France’s rural regions, Montana’s big skies, even my college years in Australia. This music tugs at the heartstrings of Kashmir travelers to those of us overlooking the Grand Canyon or trout streams of Sedona, Arizona, the desert wonder of Monument Valley...in short the melodic sensibilities we all can be touched and share with you Brits the genius of Finzi, Williams, Butterworth, your unique composers that echo our heartfelt needs for pastoral solace. God bless you all - religious or spiritual or not - nature and music is divinity enough to calm the lesser angels of our passions.
I dare say my country of America could share the banks of streams with my Russian peers were we to be listening to this and watching the same sun that rises and sets in both our countries where people want the same: peace, a place to live and raise our children, to improve our lot in life, educate ourselves and lay down arms, to express ourselves in art, music, literature and decent work and family.

I’m a Vietnam Veteran from a military family and yet I say this sincerely. ❤️🇺🇸
