According to data from the Flightradar website, claims are that a Syrian Air aircraft took off from Damascus airport around the time the rebels captured the city.
Before abruptly turning around above Homs and flying in the opposite way for a few minutes before vanishing from the map, the plane first headed towards the coastal region of Syria, which is a bastion of Assad's Alawite sect.
Since it was unclear why the plane made an unexpected U-turn and vanished from the map, two Syrian sources stated that there was a very strong chance that Assad was killed in a plane accident.
