This is like a giant love letter to the dance movies of the 30's and early 40's. Whoever put it together is amazing.

Singing in the Rain is actually a brilliant movie

During the golden era of Hollywood, it was required that performers be a triple threat - able to act, sing, and dance. The studio system meant that no matter how famous you were, you were still just an employee of the studio, and had to be ready to do whatever you were required to do under your contract. It's hard for anyone under thirty now to understand just what a massive hold musicals had on the box office, but back then if you couldn't perform in one, you were likely to miss out on a lot of work. Even Jimmy Cagney, gangster star, could dance - that's him dancing down the stairs in _Yankee Doodle Dandy._

That is JERRY from TOM & JERRY. He is contracted to be allowed to work on his own sometimes. 😂

To add to the list: Rita Hayworth. Eleanor Powell. Ann Miller. Frank Sinatra. Debbie Reynolds. Jimmie Durante. Groucho Marx. Lena Horne. Mickey Rooney. Robert Preston. Cyd Cherise. Laurel and Hardy. Donald O' Conner. You're missing out Jay! I've seen 99% of these movies 🎥 Fred Altair. Ginger Rogers. Gene Kelly. Judy Garland. Shirley Temple. Mr Bojangles.

The black duo is the Nicholas Brothers. The black man with Shirley Temple on the stairs is Bo Jangles, I believe. So many great musicals from the 30's, 40's and 50's! If you get the chance you might enjoy the 2 feature films titled That's Entertainment and That's Entertainment 2, hosted by Gene Kelly and Fred Astair. You would learn a lot and have a ball!

You meant The Nicholas Brothers not Cab Calloway the bandleader that opened that scene before they appeared. Their descent down the stairs is iconic. It's from the film "Stormy Weather "with co-stars Lena Horne and Bill "Mr. Bojangles" Robinson.

My dad was a huge fan of movies from this era, so I know a few of them. The sailor guy dancing with cartoon Jerry was Gene Kelly. Fred Astaire appeared in A LOT of these clips (the dapper guy usually in top hat and tails or smart suits, ) he was an AMAZING dancer, and the lady dancing with him was most often Ginger Rogers, but he often danced with Cyd Charisse as well. You might have spotted a young Judy Garland a few times as well (a.k.a Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, ) and the little guy she mostly danced with was Mickey Rooney. The little moppet-haired girl dancing on the stairs was of course Shirley Temple, the foxy red-haired woman in the long black evening dress was Rita Hayworth, and Bob Hope and a young Frank Sinatra were in there briefly too.

first dancers..Shirley Temple and Bill Bojangle Robinson..then Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers..Next couple in cowboy clothes..Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. 1:54 was Ann Miller in yellow and black. Lady in Black Satin.. was Rita Hayworth ..the movie was "Gilda" . Groucho Marx doing the dance in the Pith Helmet and mustache...lol.. Gene Kelly and Judy Garland - some of this stuff goes as far back as the early thirties..James Cagney and Ruby Keeler dancing on the bar-- 2:48 was a segment of "Hells a Poppin' featuring dancers doing the Lindy Hop to the extreme..Again at 6:31.. And I see you recognized the Nicholas Brothers.. Jerry the mouse and Gene Kelley (cartoon mouse) When you stopped it on the lady in black ..that's Ann Miller. She was in with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra. The lady in the pale dress with long red hair and red dance shoes..Norma Sheerer in ' The Red shoes" She later went on to do 'Sunset Boulevard.' (That was a classic check it out sometime -- a lot of memes still used on that ) 5:58 was Jimmy Cagney as George M . Cohen in 'Yankee Doodle Dandy'. The three on the couch ..Donald O'conner ..Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds in Singing in the Rain.. 7:06.. The Berry Brothers showing their chops with their cane work.. So many great dancers.. If you have TCM.. you can go through their schedule and find some great dance numbers to watch, ..Or just look up some of the name I mentioned. And .. I think I have said enough LOL.. but I love a good dance routine ..the more physical ..the better !!( ps. Look up Gene Kelley tap dancing on old fashioned street skates.. In 'Its Always Fair Weather'.. wow!!! ) I'm done.. LOL

I watch this from time to time. I really like it. But my dad would have LOVED it! So many of his favorite here. The editing is phenomenal. And talk about fun?! Watching all those movies to find just the right clips. Dang!

We live in Florida and there was storming and tornado warnings, keeping the kids inside; one teacher took advantage and played the movie "Dancing in the Rain." My daughter, a Michael Jackson/Madonna freak, came home raving about the movie. She fell in love with DANCE!!!

It always amazes me that many of the biggest stars from that era had to be able to act, sing and dance. Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly are absolutely amazing!

IIRC, the closed captioning for that video identifies the movie each clip is from.

I agree with the comments below. Whoever put this together did an AMAZING job in syncing the iconic scenes/dances to the song.

The two at the end were Fred Astaire (the greatest dancer of all time) and Gene Kelly (the second greatest dancer). The cartoon mouse was Jerry from the Tom & Jerry cartoons.
